Why people love it

  • Race beneath Hever Castle with a large festival village
  • Two loops of a 45 km (28 mi) Kent Weald bike, a real test for hill lovers
  • Well-marshalled, volunteer-rich event, with a goody bag in 2016
  • Swim in the castle lake, called stunning and unique by Tri247

Watch out for

  • About 1,450 m (4,760 ft) of bike climbing over 90 km (56 mi); expect a slow day
  • Shallow, murky lake with a narrow canal finish that bottlenecks overtaking
  • Parking is a long walk from the venue
  • Roads are marshalled rather than closed; September water about 17 °C (63 °F)

What racers and reviewers say

  • the5krunner: Hever Gauntlet race report 2016Raced 2016 · blog · Positive

Detailed account of a hot September day: 17 C (63 F) murky shallow lake with a narrow canal finish, a hilly lane bike on roads with traffic stopped, and a trail run many walked. Praises the volunteers and goody bag; a puncture and cramp cost a top-five age-group place.

“The course is not flat. Anywhere.”

    the5krunner
  • the5krunner: Hever Castle Gauntlet 2017Raced 2017 · blog · Positive

Sunny day and a personal best on a returning visit. Calls it a really good, challenging event with a bigger village than Ironman UK, but notes crowds are strong only inside the grounds and that results printouts and wave splits were confusing.

  • July championship edition on the same course: non-wetsuit warm murky lake, two 45 km (28 mi) bike loops with about 1,450 m (4,760 ft) of climbing, and a two-lap trail run with about 215 m (705 ft) that he estimates adds 30 minutes to a half-marathon. Very hot; transitions mostly well run but T2 lacked numbered hooks.

  • RaceCheck review 3439 (2016)Raced 2016 · aggregator · Positive

Rated the race 4.6/5. Notes about 380 starters, two 45 km (28 mi) bike loops with about 1,500 m (4,920 ft) of climbing and a 10.5 km (6.5 mi) run loop done twice. Well marshalled and welcoming, but parking was a long walk, children on the run course were a hazard and a driver abused a marshal; the reviewer crashed and wrote from hospital.

  • Tri247: Hever Castle Triathlon 2017 reportRaced 2017 · article · Positive

Report on a sunny weekend with over 6,000 athletes. Describes the Gauntlet as tough and undulating, the swim as stunning and unique, and gives winners of 4:25:18 and 5:39:46. Athletes praised the crowd and atmosphere.

“Once you experience this race you get the bug and want to return.”

  • Castle Race Series 2023 festival reportRaced 2023 · article · Positive
