Why people love it

  • Cold, very clear Lake Taupo swim at about 18-19 °C (64-66 °F), wetsuit legal

  • Hosted the 2024 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship
  • Cool March conditions with highs of 18-21 °C (64-70 °F)

Watch out for

  • Rough chipseal on the bike; consider lower tyre pressure
  • Tailwind out, stiff headwind home; about 550 m (1,800 ft) of rolling climbing
  • Lake can turn rough in the wrong wind; the 2017 swim was dropped for algae
  • Long-haul travel via Auckland plus about 280 km (175 mi) of driving
  • Intense sun even on cool days

What racers and reviewers say

  • Earth TrekkersRaced 2024 · blog · Positive

Race report from the 2024 Worlds on the Taupo venue: beautiful, clear lake swim, farmland bike with a late headwind, and a scenic, cafe-lined two-loop run with Ruapehu views. Travelled four days early, warns about intense sun and NZ biosecurity (honey) and lake-swim rules. Course differs from the regular race (point-to-point swim).

“This was an excellent spectator-friendly course”

  • Slowtwitch forum (Worlds thread)Raced 2019 · forum · Mixed

A Kiwi and a March finisher say the lake is cold but clear and generally calm unless the wind is wrong, the bike is undulating (about 1,800 ft / 550 m (1,800 ft)) on rough chipseal with a deceptive tailwind out and stiff headwind in, and the run is fairly flat with great crowds. Advice: stay in town, book early, plan big travel costs for bike transport.
