Why people love it

  • Fast flat course, with a current-assisted point-to-point swim in earlier editions
  • Run past the Bridge of the Americas and the canal entrance on the Amador Causeway
  • Sea-level, big-airport city with plenty of modern hotels
  • Late-February date suits a winter escape

Watch out for

  • Heat of 33 °C (92 °F), feeling like 38 °C (100 °F), was recorded in 2016, with little run shade
  • Course and logistics have changed repeatedly, including the bike the day before the 2016 race
  • 2016 reports of a late swim start, long transition and crowded shuttles
  • Some hotels sat about 8 km (5 mi) from transition in 2016
  • Few recent athlete reports, so scores rest on thin evidence

  • Slowtwitch forum: Panama City 70.3Raced 2016 · forum · Mixed

Spectator-side report on the 2016 race. Swim was point-to-point with a helpful current, but the start slipped an hour with no water for athletes. The bike route changed the day before and again on race morning, with drafting and little officiating. Run was flat, exposed and very hot, with sparse aid. Hotels were decent, check-in slow and shuttles crowded; overall verdict lukewarm.

“Race logistics and organization were poor.”
