Latest edition: Held in Nelson Mandela Bay (Gqeberha / Port Elizabeth) for 21 years, last full-distance edition 19 Apr 2026. On 4 Aug 2026 IRONMAN announced the full-distance race moves to Mossel Bay (Garden Route) for 18 Apr 2027 (proposal reported for 2027-2029); Nelson Mandela Bay keeps a 70.3 on 31 Jan 2027. What racers and reviewers say

  • Trizone (Shawn Smith)Raced 2017 · article · Mixed

Preview of the 2017 African Championship. Single 3.8 km (2.4 mi) choppy ocean lap, two bike loops with an early steep climb and a headwind on the exposed coastal return, and a fast, fairly flat four-lap run. Warns that weather swings widely and a prior heat wave caught many out.

“The good thing about bad conditions is everyone suffers.”

    Shawn Smith
  • Singletrack World forumRaced 2014 · forum · Mixed

First-person report from an age-grouper finishing in 11:35. Practice swims were choppy but race day calmer. The easterly wind built through the day, giving a headwind on the exposed coast and a cross-wind near transition. Heat was not an issue and the author was cold afterwards.

  • Torq Fitness (Eleanor Haresign)Raced 2015 · blog · Mixed

Pro report: easterly wind made the swim choppy but manageable, and the bike lonely with rough roads and a late headwind. Run included a hill near the university each lap and she faded in the third lap. Finished 11th and called it a learning experience.

  • Triathlon Magazine Canada - destination guideRaced 2016 · article · Positive

Describes a single-lap rolling-start swim, a relatively flat but windy bike changed to two longer hillier loops to reduce drafting, and a run through downtown with intense, enthusiastic crowds. Gives air temps of 20-32 °C (68-90 °F) and water 17-24 °C (63-75 °F).

  • TriRating - 2018 analysisRaced 2018 · aggregator · Mixed

Data-driven look at the 2018 race: good weather but little wind, and times still slow, with winning time 8:13 versus the 2017 course record of 7:58:40. Notes slow ocean swim and typical bike/run conditions; course not described as especially fast.

  • Triathlon Magazine Canada - 2019 swim deathsRaced 2019 · article · Negative

News report that two athletes died during the rough-water swim, which organizers cut from 3.8 km (2.4 mi) to 1.6 km (1.0 mi) before the start. The race continued. A serious safety data point for ocean conditions here.

  • Slowtwitch - 2017 resultsRaced 2017 · article · Positive

Race report on the record-setting 2017 African Championship: Hoffman 7:58:40, Ryf 8:47:02. Shows the course can produce very fast times when conditions are right. No weather or course commentary.

  • TriRating - 2021 conditionsRaced 2021 · aggregator · Mixed

Notes the 2021 swim was shortened to about 1.6 km (1.0 mi) because conditions were unsafe for weaker athletes, producing slow times. Commenters suggest the run was about 1 km (0.6 mi) short that day. Bike times matched earlier years.

  • Slowtwitch - 2021 resultsRaced 2021 · article · Mixed

Results piece for the November 2021 edition, with the swim cut roughly in half because of conditions. Lists splits only and gives no atmosphere or course commentary.

  • Slowtwitch - Ups and Downs 2025Raced 2025 · article · Mixed

Commentary on the 2025 race: three-lap bike with some narrow sections (reader comments), a wrong turn in transition costing a pro the front pack, and criticism of the live broadcast commentary. Ditlev and Reischmann won with fastest bike splits.

  • The Triathlete UK - 2026 previewRaced 2026 · article · Mixed

Confirms the 2026 layout: one 3.8 km (2.4 mi) swim loop that can be choppy with morning swell, two rolling bike loops on exposed coast where wind is often decisive, and a mostly flat four-loop beachfront run. 8 pro Kona slots and a $150,000 purse.

  • The Herald (Gqeberha) - why the race is leavingRaced 2026 · article · Negative

Local paper reports the move of the full-distance race out of Nelson Mandela Bay, citing a steady fall in athlete participation. Rest of article is paywalled so other reasons are unknown.

  • Hotel listing - Town Lodge Gqeberhahotel-review · Positive

Summerstrand beachfront hotel listing claims about 1.2 km (0.75 mi) to race start, transition, finish and expo, with breakfast, pool and a short hop (4.7 km (2.9 mi) / 2.9 mi) to the airport. Marketing listing, not guest reviews.
