What racers and reviewers say

  • Feature on the 2022 edition: a free, retro race modeled on the 1978 Ironman with Douro bank swim, heavy steel bikes, open-traffic bike and run with no aid stations, and a finish tradition of waiting for the last athlete before the podium. Describes a friendship-first atmosphere and a 2018 storm that left three athletes out at 10 p.m.

  • Spirit of 78 - Raymond Evarts race reportRaced 2021 · blog · Positive

First-ever triathlon finisher recounts a foggy swim he enjoyed, starting the bike too hard and nearly quitting at halfway before finding the course scenic and the energy good, then a run-walk marathon. Finished as last man and got a trophy and next-year entry. Notes a fair amount of road traffic.

  • Spirit of 78 - Nick Mansley race reportRaced 2021 · blog · Positive

Visitor from abroad found a misty, magical 4.2 km (2.6 mi) swim, six 30 km (19 mi) river laps with small hills and easy food pick-up, and a hot sunny run that made him overheat and fall on cobbles. Finished 11:00, 9th overall; calls it friendly, competitive, free, and a great excuse for a Porto holiday.

  • Pre-dawn mist, mirror-calm Douro and a weaker current than past years; wetsuits mandatory for safety. Six 30 km (19 mi) bike laps with one fuelling point, six 7 km (4.3 mi) run laps including a footbridge and promenade to Maria Pia bridge. 41 starters; the single aid station turned into a music party and finishers got replica Ironman trophies.

  • Spirit of 78 - Gil Caldeira 2018 storyRaced 2018 · blog · Mixed

Dawn Douro swim, a bike course of about 15 km (9 mi) out and 15 km (9.3 mi) back so riders pass each other twice per lap, then a run that collapsed around km 20 (mile 12) as night, rain and a storm with strong gusts arrived. A spectator's warm garment lifted spirits; last runner pushed on to finish the full distance despite the offer of a shortened finish.

  • Spirit of 78 - Jose P. Canela 2018 storyRaced 2018 · blog · Positive

Raced with a cold; swam about 4.37 km (2.7 mi) with a favorable current in about 56 min, averaged about 31 km (19.3 mi)/h (19 mph) on a party-like bike course with lots of people, then walked much of the marathon with a friend who struggled. Heavy rain came in but mood stayed high; suggests better driver signage at turnarounds.

  • Strong swim in a weak river current and low water, a bike that started with a jammed chain and sore biceps from frame-mounted shifters and heavy steel, then a 3:35 marathon and a top-five finish. Enjoyed the many period outfits and the artisan-made trophy.

  • Cold dark start, tide near low making the stair exit tough, six rolling laps with constant ups and downs but no big climbs, open traffic, and a run with 12 passes through a big all-day party area; about a third of starters dropped on the run. Winner 10:11.

  • Beat Your Limit - Spirit of 78 (2022)Raced 2022 · blog · Positive

Club report: a swimmer who calls the swim his weak spot did ~1h10 with the current; a clubmate dropped out on the bike with stomach trouble. Support crews, a stranger who shared food, and cafe owners with coffee kept the finisher going to 14:49 in an emotional first iron-distance.

  • Report on the 9th edition: calm sunrise swim timed near tide change (a bad line can add about 500 m (1,640 ft) / 550 yd), six bike loops with aid and frequent passing, and a 7 km (4.3 mi) run loop with one aid point where heat was the main challenge. Festival atmosphere with music and food; 14 of 45 starters finished in the retro club.

  • Portuguese preview describing the Freixo to Crestuma dam riverbank route, 4.2 km (2.6 mi) swim accompanied by friends in boats, open-traffic bike that obeys road rules, and a festive friendship-focused event capped at 80.

  • Running.life - Spirit of 78 TriathlonRaced 2026 · aggregator · Positive

Listing: wetsuits recommended, drafting banned, nutrition stations every 30 km (19 mi) on the bike and every 3.5 km (2.2 mi) on the run, two transition areas near Freixo, 80-athlete cap, each athlete must bring own support crew.

  • GTspirit - Pestana Palacio do Freixo reviewRaced 2016 · hotel-review · Positive

Review of the palace hotel that sits at the swim exit: 8.5/10 overall, strong service and food, spacious rooms, spa and riverside pontoon; about 20 min from the airport. Luxury pricing is not mentioned.
