Why people love it

  • Crowds line almost the whole 42.2 km (26.2 mi), loudest at the Wellesley Scream Tunnel and Boston College.
  • Net drop of about 129 m (423 ft) from Hopkinton to the Boylston Street finish.
  • Water and sports drink about every 1.6 km (1 mi) from mile 2 to mile 26.
  • The finish on Boylston Street is the best-reviewed moment of the day.

Watch out for

  • Entry needs a qualifying time, charity bib or tour package. Standards start at 2:55 for men 18 to 34.
  • The bus to Hopkinton takes about 60 minutes, then expect a 1 to 2 hour wait in the Athletes' Village.
  • The early downhill taxes quads, and four hills between 25.7 and 33.8 km (16 and 21 mi) hit tired legs.
  • Slower runners reported aid stations being broken down by 37 km (23 mi).
  • Hotels run $800 to $1,200 a night and sell out.
