Why people love it

  • Sunrise start in Icicle Canyon with river and mountain views; fall colour in early October.
  • Net downhill of about 400 m (1,312 ft); USATF certified Boston qualifier.
  • Aid every 3 to 5 km (2 to 3 mi), with gels at miles 10 and 21.
  • Small field of about 300 finishers, so no crowds on the course.
  • Oktoberfest weekend and Bavarian village for post-race food.

Watch out for

  • Mandatory shuttle bus from 5:45 a.m.; driving to the start gets you disqualified.
  • About a third of the course is dirt or sand trail, per one runner.
  • Early 14.5 km (9 mi) descent hits quads hard by mile 20 (32 km).
  • Oktoberfest weekend means full hotels and higher prices.
  • Few spectators in the canyon and on trails; shirt cost $20 extra in 2026.

What racers and reviewers say

  • RaceRaves Leavenworth Marathon & Half MarathonRaced 2025 · aggregator · Positive

Rated 4.3 of 5 by 23 runners, scenery 4.7, production 4.0, swag 3.3. Reviewers agree on a gorgeous sunrise canyon descent, strong volunteers and a friendly small field. Complaints: sandy and unpaved sections, tough on quads, limited swag, shirt extra, and one 2026 marathoner found it low budget with no expo.

“It was BY FAR my favorite course I have done.”

  • MarathonGuide Leavenworth Marathon reviewRaced 2023 · aggregator · Positive

Rated 5.0. Called it a standout fall race and a race-cation timed with Oktoberfest. The first 10 miles (16 km) are a gradual descent that left quads sore by mile 20 (32 km). Mild crowding where marathoners meet half marathoners; many first-time marathoners; good finish festivities and volunteers.

    “Overall incredible race and weekend!”

    Whitney D.
  • Report on the first edition with about 280 participants. Two clockwise loops, canyon climb to a turnaround, dirt trails beside the river, aid about every 2 miles (3.2 km) and helpful volunteers. Calm and overcast at 50s to 60s °F (10 to 20 °C (68 °F)), spectacular fall colour. Route has changed since, so treat course details as dated.

“The fall color of trees and shrubs was spectacular.”

    Bob Dolphin
  • Preview of the 2014 race: mixed asphalt and dirt, aid every 2 to 3 miles (3 to 5 km), $100 marathon fee then, six hour limit. A reader comment says he ran it the year before and loved it. Preview, not a first-hand report.

“A stunningly beautiful course in the scenic town of Leavenworth.”
