Why people love it

  • Route passes the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Capitol and Georgetown, with Marines handling bag drop and water stops.
  • Crowds are loud on the Mall, in Crystal City and at the finish.
  • Mostly flat central DC course, with a steep finish hill up to the Marine Corps War Memorial.
  • Marathon is a Boston qualifier; runners rate it about 4.5 of 5 overall.

Watch out for

  • Expo lines of 30 to 60 minutes and a 30 to 40 minute walk from Metro to the start.
  • No waves in 2023, and the field stayed crowded until about 30.6 km (mile 19) in an older report.
  • Hains Point and the 14th Street Bridge at 32 km (mile 20) have few spectators, and a pace cutoff applies.
  • Hot or humid in 2016 and 2023; the 2023 course closed at 1:15 p.m.
  • Sold out for 2025; Metro lines after the finish were long.

What racers and reviewers say

  • RaceRavesRaced 2025 · aggregator · Positive

Average 4.5 of 5 (scenery 4.6, production 4.2, difficulty 3.1). Runners love the scenery and crowds. Common complaints are crowding from the huge field, expo lines, Metro delays and a slow post-race exit. Weather in the 2025 race was called perfect.

  • MarathonGuide (2021 to 2023 pages)Raced 2023 · aggregator · Mixed

Two reviewers (3.7 and 4.0). Both liked the sightseeing and Marines but described 30 to 60 minute expo waits, a 30 to 40 minute walk from Metro and no waves. One found the last 4 miles (6.4 km) dull highway. 2023 was unusually warm and humid.

    “Great sightseeing course in DC”

  • BibRaveblog · Positive

Praised Marine-run bag drop, start and water stops and the monuments. Noted Hains Point (about 4 miles, 6.4 km (4 mi)) and the 14th Street Bridge have almost no spectators and that the expo was mobbed because of the field size.

  • DC RainmakerRaced 2007 · blog · Positive

Liked the reworked course past Georgetown and the memorials over the old route. Crowds on the Mall were huge and loud near mile 26. Hains Point felt isolated. Enjoyed the steep short hill at the finish.

    “painfully 'blah'”

    Ray Maker
  • Run Eat RepeatRaced 2013 · blog · Positive

Called it the best US course she had run but hillier than expected. Start was congested with about 30,000 runners until about mile 19 (30.6 km). Crowds loud at the finish; thorough organisation; the last 6 miles (9.7 km) dull until the cemetery.

  • Peanut Butter RunnerRaced 2010 · blog · Positive

Ideal sunny weather and strong crowds; about 35,000 runners, never alone. Took Metro then walked about 1 mile (1.6 km) to the start. Post-race Metro lines were long. Mile 20 bridge was a low point and the finish hill short and steep.

  • Fannetastic FoodRaced 2016 · blog · Mixed

Hot sunny day was the main challenge. Crowds several deep at the Lincoln Memorial and Crystal City like a street party; quiet around mile 24 (38.6 km). Blue Mile somber; the 14th Street Bridge hardest. Security quick, toilet lines long.

  • WashingtonianRaced 2013 · article · neutral

News recap of 2013: about 30,000 runners, thousands of spectators; shutdown fears nearly postponed the race. Announced a lottery for entry the next year.

  • Marathon HandbookRaced 2025 · article · neutral

Guide for 2025: mostly flat and fast through central DC with early inclines, a steady challenge on the bridge and an uphill finish. Race is sold out and a Boston qualifier. Typical morning 7 to 10 °C (45 to 50 °F). Use Pentagon or Pentagon City Metro for the start.
