Why people love it

  • Route passes the Champs-Elysees, Louvre, Bastille, the Seine quays and views of the Eiffel Tower.
  • Crowds are strongest in the centre and loudest at Place de la Bastille.
  • Mostly flat, with about 161 m (528 ft) of gain by one runner's watch.
  • Metro reaches both the start and the finish, and the expo bib pickup is quick.

Watch out for

  • Aid is thin: water in 330 ml (11 oz) bottles, with no gels or sports drink in many years.
  • Corral gates close 15 to 20 minutes before the start, and some corral waits ran to about 2 hours.
  • Flat cobbles near the start and finish, tunnel ramps and a climb into the Bois near 24 km (15 mi).
  • A medical certificate or online self-certification is required for entry.
  • The 50,000 limit sells out, and the field is crowded in the first 2 km (1.2 mi).

What racers and reviewers say

  • RaceRaves: Paris MarathonRaced 2015 to 2026 · aggregator · positive with caveats

Runners rate scenery 4.6 of 5 and production 3.5. They agree on the landmarks and crowds. The common complaints are long staggered corral waits, narrow crowded stretches, cobbles and aid and shirt shortages in some years.

  • Team Run Run: Paris Marathon race reportRaced 2019 · blog · Positive

Finished in 3:40 and rated it 4 of 5. Mostly flat with tunnel ramps, a hill at the park entrance and tricky cobbles. Aid was about every 3 mi (5 km), first at 6 mi (10 km), so it was hectic. Corral entry was easy.

“The course is a great way to visit Paris”

    Philippe D
  • Set a PR of 3:59. Flat cobbles barely registered; about 528 ft (161 m) of gain. Water and fruit about every 5 km (3 mi), no gels or sports drink. Corrals close strictly 15 to 20 minutes before the start. Long toilet lines.

“You didn't run 21 miles on pace to lose your sub-4”

    Lily Fang
  • DC Rainmaker: Paris Marathon report 2015Raced 2015 · blog · Mixed

Crowded but manageable. Bag drop took about 20 minutes. His corral was about 800 m (0.5 mi) away and the gates closed 15 to 20 minutes early, so he started late. Aid was oranges and water; finish food was big.

“It's like pre-security at the airport.”

    Ray Maker
  • DC Rainmaker: Paris Marathon report 2013Raced 2013 · blog · Positive

Well organised overall. Seeded corrals on a wide Champs-Elysees; gates closed minutes before the gun and some climbed fences. Water about every 2.5 to 3.1 mi (4 to 5 km), no gels. Crowds thicker in the core. Sunny and warm.

“Overall, we'd definitely do it again.”

    Ray Maker

  • Racecast: Paris Marathon runner reportsRaced 2024 to 2025 · aggregator · Positive

About 73 percent of reporters would run it again. Chaotic first 2 km (1.2 mi), segmented corrals that separated runners from pacers, big support from Bastille, and a hard patch after 30 km (19 mi). 330 ml (11 oz) bottles at 5 km (3 mi) caused confusion.

    “the support was insane”

    19 runner reports
  • MarathonGuide: Paris runner reviewRaced 2023 · aggregator · Positive

Gave 5 of 5. Scenic Seine route and lively crowds, with an organised expo and start. Negatives: a congested finish, a crowded course, thin crowds in the Bois, hills late, cobbles and water only in bottles.
