Why people love it

  • Net drop of about 470 m (1,550 ft), most of it in the shaded canyon first half.
  • Small, well-run race: 179 marathon finishers in 2023, with praised volunteers.
  • Aid about every 2 miles (3 km) with gels, fruit and a big post-race meal.
  • Boston-qualifying certified course; the 2026 start was moved to meet elevation rules.

Watch out for

  • Start is near 1,890 m (6,200 ft); runners say altitude hurt the last 8 miles (13 km).
  • Miles 14 to 24 (23 to 39 km (24.2 mi)) are open highway with no shade and traffic.
  • Mandatory dark bus ride to the start; no personal vehicles.
  • Early September highs range from 14 °C (58 °F) to 33 °C (92 °F).

  • RaceRaves review: dsbland (2017)Raced 2017 · blog · Mixed

Start near 6,200 ft (1,890 m). Fantastic technical downhill first half; highway second half from miles 14 to 24 (23 to 39 km) was exposed, with traffic and little scenery. Praised packet pickup and pasta dinner.

  • RaceRaves review: BrooklandRunner (2019)Raced 2019 · blog · Positive

Started in the dark, watched the sunrise, noticed an uphill turnaround near mile 7 (11 km) and a later hill, and qualified for Boston.

  • Two 2025 marathoners: cool shaded canyon first half, then full sun, hilly and 'seemed empty'. Altitude and GI problems slowed one; a toenail was damaged by the downhill. Finish had food, drinks and massage tables.
