Cruz enjoyed the mountain views and appreciated the regular aid stations at a small event. The steep early descent encouraged a pace he later found unsustainable, and subsequent climbs were harder than the net-downhill profile suggested. Finishing and supporting a friend's first marathon made the day meaningful.
