Why people love it

  • Start at Gwanghwamun Plaza and finish inside the Olympic Stadium at Jamsil.
  • Flat: 93 m (305 ft) of gain; Boston qualifier and World Athletics Platinum Label.
  • Subway lines reach Jamsil, 150 m (500 ft) from the stadium.
  • Water and sports drink every 5 km (3.1 mi); gels at 20, 30 and 35 km (12, 19, 22 mi).
  • Few athletes have written about the run, so recent detail is thin.

Watch out for

  • Starts are 2 to 4 °C (36 to 39 °F); bring throwaway layers.
  • Jamsil Bridge at 34 to 35 km (21 to 22 mi) climbs into a headwind.
  • Bag trucks closed 30 to 45 minutes before the start in past years.
  • Entry needs a sub-5 hour marathon certificate and sells out quickly.
  • Spring yellow dust can affect air quality.

What racers and reviewers say

  • MarathonGuideRaced 2019 · aggregator · Mixed

Raced 2017 and 2019 and rated it 2.0. Found the course flat but bland and concrete-heavy, the start plaza crowded with too few toilets, and baggage trucks closing 30 to 45 minutes early. Called the later lottery confusing.

“The course is very flat, though, which can be a boon.”

    Matthew Crawford
  • RaceRavesRaced 2024 · aggregator · Mixed

Two reviewers disagree. One (2024) found the flat course not scenic, crowds small and sign-up confusing, but packet pickup easy and aid every 5 km (3.1 mi). One (2022) found many cheering spectators, a tough route with bridges and turns, and easy subway viewing.

First-time marathoner in 2019. Dropped bags by 7:30, then waited over an hour in the cold before crossing the line at 8:30 as part of the last group. Spent about the first 16 km (10 mi) weaving through other runners; finish inside the Olympic Stadium felt great.

“it was such a good feeling when I finally crossed the finish line”

    Ted Wang
