Shakespeare Marathon
Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom · April · Independent
Why people love it
- Country lanes, thatched villages and a start by the River Avon.
- Water every 4.8 km (3 mi); results and free photos posted quickly.
- Half and full share the first lap, so friends can see you twice.
- About 1,693 marathon finishers in 2026 and open entry.
Watch out for
- Two gravel Greenway stretches, narrow and lonely from 32 to 40 km (mile 20 to 25).
- Hills near miles 7 and 18 (11 and 29 km); steep descents hurt the quads.
- Narrow start took 5 minutes to cross in 2026; the half runs alongside.
- Warm days are possible; 2018 and 2026 runners slowed in the heat.
- Few reviews exist, and the fee, start time and cutoff were not found.

What racers and reviewers say
- Steel City Striders race reportRaced 2026 · blog · Positive
Club runner finished in 3:50:46 among 1,693 finishers. Called it undulating with big challenges at miles 7 and 18 (11 and 29 km) and warm by the second half. Gravel Greenway was narrow with cyclists and walkers. Well organised with water every 3 miles (4.8 km), fast results, free photos. Not a PB course but good to avoid crowds.
“Not a pb course but if you want to get away from the crowds it's a good one.”
- Steel City Striders race reportRaced 2018 · blog · Mixed
Almost perfect conditions at the start. Good crowds in the tight turns of town, pretty villages, one main incline near mile 8 (13 km) with a tricky descent. Second lap longer by 3 miles (4.8 km). The Greenway from miles 20 to 25 (32 to 40 km) felt lonely and reflective in the sun. 486 finishers.
“The most mentally challenging part of the course.”
