Why people love it

  • Net drop 455 m (1,493 ft), gain only 89 m (292 ft); Boston qualifier with no time penalty.
  • Buses leave Oro Valley Marketplace and the host resort at 5:00 to 6:15 am for the Biosphere 2 start.
  • Aid every 1.6 to 4.8 km (1 to 3 mi) with sports drink, bananas and Oreos.
  • Eight pace groups from 3:20 to 5:30 and a 7.5 hour limit.
  • Men's course record is 2:12:47 and women's 2:38:30, set in 2024.

Watch out for

  • Little shade: runners warm from 7 °C (44 °F) to 23 °C (74 °F), and 2025 was hot.
  • The steep descent damages quads; a 2025 runner cramped late and slowed badly.
  • Some aid stops had no gels (2022, 2025) and one ran out of electrolytes in 2026.
  • Friday packet pickup is in Phoenix, 190 km (120 mi) away; Saturday pickup is at the finish campus.
  • Cyclists share The Loop path with runners, and the post-race party is small.

What racers and reviewers say

  • RaceRaves Tucson Marathon reviewsRaced 2026 · aggregator · Positive

16 ratings, 4.0 of 5 (difficulty 2.1, scenery 3.3, production 4.0, swag 2.3). Runners agree it is fast and well organised with good buses, police and volunteers and a generous time limit. Complaints: no shade and a 15 to 20 °C (27 to 36 °F) warm-up, no gels at some stops, bus and packet confusion, little swag and no big party.

“It's meant to be a fast course, and it is!”

    RaceRaves members (16 ratings)
  • Shuttled from Oro Valley Marketplace to Biosphere 2. Steep first mile, sun intense from about 35 km (22 mi), cramping on a net-downhill course, aid every 3 to 4 km (2 to 2.5 mi) and shared trail with cyclists. Finish food was only inside the zone with no re-entry. 3:26 finish, but happy to check off Arizona.

“The sun was becoming a problem.”

    Felix Wong
  • A runner with no downhill training destroyed his quads on the 600 m (2,000 ft) descent after a fast half. Buses picked up at the host hotel lobby, which he found convenient. Old edition, different start from 2024.

“that pace on that course obviously was not sustainable”

    Conejo Valley Guide blogger
  • Fitnessista: Tucson Half Marathon recapRaced 2012 · blog · mixed-positive

Half marathon, not the full. Bus to the start, heaters and warm clothes drop, 3 °C (37 °F) start, glorious early downhill but sore legs by 17 km (11 mi), mountains and desert all around. Dated and different distance.

“It just wasn't my day for running.”

    Gina (Fitnessista)
  • About 3,000 runners across events; start at Biosphere 2, finish at Pima Northwest. Winner Joseph Moreno ran 2:27 and said it was hot compared to usual. Called one of the fastest Boston-qualifying marathons.

  • BibRave Tucson Marathon reviewsRaced 2013 · aggregator · Positive

Reviewers call it mostly downhill with a short climb, cold at the start but pleasant once the sun is up. Warns of dead legs after the steep early miles and a late start area set-up on old editions.

“almost all downhill with a single short climb”

    BibRave ambassadors (several years)
  • Local news piece: about 3,000 expected across events, start moved to Biosphere 2 and finish to Pima Northwest last year; the organiser says it is a USATF-certified Boston qualifier and not all downhill. Director calls Biosphere 2 beautiful before sunrise.

    “an iconic landmark”

Tucson Spotlight; director Jamil Coury quoted
