What racers and reviewers say
- RaceRaves (81 ratings)Raced 2026 · aggregator · mostly positive
4.5 of 5 from 81 ratings (35 marathon). Runners praise a fast, downhill-leaning course, Ojai mountain views, strong organization and waffles. Repeated complaints: cold waits for early shuttles, long toilet lines, a second half that is more rolling than downhill, and sun in the last 8 km (5 mi).
“The very early shuttle buses lead to cold waits at the start”
- FindMyMarathon race reviewsRaced 2026 · aggregator · Positive
Six reviews, 4.7 average. Flat for about 14 km (9 mi) then a long shaded descent; the final 13 km (8 mi) feel flat. Downhill pounds the legs, one runner ran the second half 15 plus minutes slower. 2016 reviewer left unhappy about missing 3:00 and 3:05 pacers and the half merging at the finish.
“The volunteers were fantastic”
- Racecast race reportsRaced 2025 · aggregator · Positive
Seven reports, all would run again. Start is slightly uphill with rolling hills in the first 14 km (9 mi); downhill from mile 8 and again toward the ocean from mile 12.7 (20 km). Water and Tailwind about every 3 km (2 mi), porta potties at every stop. Heat and fatigue hit after mile 20 (32 km).
“Well staffed and efficient”
- Ashley Mateo, Ventura Half Marathon recap (Substack)Raced 2023 · blog · Positive
Half marathon recap as a Tokyo Marathon shakeout. About 282 ft (86 m) total gain with roughly 70 ft (21 m) in the first mile, then a gradual descent losing about 800 ft (244 m). The early climb kept her from starting too fast; pace felt easy on the downhill. Snow on the peaks near the start.
- Lubos, 2017 Ventura Marathon recapRaced 2017 · blog · Mixed
First year of the Ojai to Ventura course, 3:19:05 and a 10:54 PR. Net drop about 900 ft (274 m) but a 200 ft (61 m) climb in miles 3 to 6 and 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of late uphill in Ventura. Start was poorly lit with about 20 toilets for over 1,000 runners, gels advertised at the wrong miles, and 24 °C (75 °F) in the last 6 miles (10 km).
“They really need to get some lights here”

- Conejo Joe, Conejo Valley Guide, 2012 race recapRaced 2012 · blog · Positive
Second year, then called Ojai 2 Ocean. Net downhill of 700 ft (213 m), 809 marathon finishers and a sellout; 24 runners broke 3 hours on an overcast morning described as perfect.
“perfect marathon weather”
- Runner's Connect race guideRaced 2026 · article · neutral
Net drop 755 ft (230 m); an opening climb of 42 m (139 ft) in miles 1 to 3, then a long descent. Warns not to run the downhills faster than goal pace because of quad fatigue after mile 20 (32 km). Lists a 7 hour cutoff.
- MarathonGuide 2017 results pageRaced 2022 · aggregator · Negative
Two 2022 reviews of the earlier Mountains 2 Beach event, scoring about 2 of 5, citing a 17 minute late start, unclear mile markers, an off-course turn adding about 0.8 km (0.5 mi) and limited electrolyte stations. A different organiser era, so weighted lightly.
