Why people love it

  • Swim loops Insel der Jugend in the Spree, and the bridges give spectators close views for free.
  • Closed, flat bike loops of 6.34 km (3.9 mi) and a flat run through Treptower Park.
  • Treptower Park S-Bahn station is at the venue, and BER airport is about 20 km (12 mi) away.
  • Sprint runs Saturday and Olympic Sunday from the same park, so first-timers can start short.
  • The 2026 Olympic bike is about 36 km (22.6 mi), so fast times are likely.

Watch out for

  • Drafting has been allowed in age-group races. Expect packs, tight corners and crashes on the loops.
  • Wetsuit rule is set on race morning. The river is murky green, 17 to 20 °C (63 to 68 °F).
  • Heat reached 35 °C (95 °F) in 2014, when run water ran short and there were no sponges.
  • Olympic needs a German Triathlon Union start pass or day licence, and transition has been called too small.
  • Distances change year to year, so check the athlete guide. Few reports cover recent editions.

What racers and reviewers say

  • EiswuerfelImSchuh blog (Olympic, 2015)Raced 2015 · blog · Positive

Olympic report with a course best. Swim of more than 30 minutes around the island in a wetsuit, then nine laps of a four-corner block course with drafting allowed and cutting-in riders, a crowded T1, two 5 km (3.1 mi) run laps with one confusing fork. Helpers and crowds were loud and encouraging.

  • EiswuerfelImSchuh blog (Olympic, 2014)Raced 2014 · blog · Mixed

Hot 2014 race where the wetsuit ban came late and the water was green and murky. Nine laps of 4.3 km (2.7 mi) with drafting and tight corners; run water ran out at 7.5 km (4.7 mi). Praised volunteers and fans but criticised water supply, cooling and bike safety.

  • Das Tridream blogRaced 2015 · blog · Mixed

Olympic in sunny 25 °C (77 °F) with 19 °C (66 °F) Spree water, two swim laps of about 750 m (0.47 mi), then nine 4.3 km (2.7 mi) laps on closed roads that felt dangerous with drafting. Run on Puschkinallee with little shade, transition too small, run course not closed off. Still enjoyed it.

  • TuS Neukoelln club reportRaced 2013 · blog · Mixed

Cold, wet June 2013: 12 °C (54 °F) air, 17 °C (63 °F) Spree water, wind-chopped swim (school-age swim cancelled), rain, crashes and punctures on drafting-legal laps, and a muddy run with a five-step staircase. Club results celebrated, but conditions harsh.

  • RSV Osthelden (Radsportbezirk Westfalen-Mitte)Raced 2020 · article · Positive

Sunny 2020 edition with 20 °C (68 °F) water, a closed 6.3 km (3.9 mi) bike circuit with drafting, and a flat 5 km (3.1 mi) run through Treptower Park. About 1,200 starters with small start waves under Covid rules; upbeat podium report.
