Why people love it

  • Jump from a ferry beside Alcatraz, then swim 2.4 km (1.5 mi) back to the city
  • Run passes under the Golden Gate Bridge to Baker Beach
  • Entry is by lottery: about 12,000 applied for 1,500 individual places in 2026
  • Since 2026 a staff-controlled start sends small groups off every 5 to 10 seconds

Watch out for

  • Bay water is 12 to 14 °C (54 to 57 °F) with a strong tidal current
  • Bike climbs about 457 m (1,500 ft) in 29 km (18 mi) on rough, technical roads
  • No aid on the bike and gels are not allowed on course
  • Pre-dawn bus and ferry, and parking is very difficult. Skip the rental car.
  • The 2025 start injured a competitor. Check the current start rules.

What racers and reviewers say

  • Slowtwitch forum: Alcatraz Race Report (long)Raced 2007 · forum · Positive

Age-grouper's long report from 2007. Swim took about 41 min in choppy 57 °F (14 °C) water with a left-to-right current. Bike had many steep hills and rough pavement in Golden Gate Park. The run included the 400-step sand ladder. Race felt well organised and a standout day.

“I just can't say that I've ever had a better time at a race.”

  • blueseventy: Escape from Alcatraz TriathlonRaced 2016 · article · Mixed

Gear-brand swim advice from an athlete who raced in 2016. Bay water rarely passes the mid-60s F (about 18 °C (64 °F)), so hoods and booties are common. Big swells and strong currents; aim straight across and let the current carry you. Six strokes without sighting can put you about 15 m (49 ft) off line.

  • Organization for Autism Research: Race RecapRaced 2018 · blog · Positive

Charity-team recap of the June 2018 race. An 11-person first-time team all finished, about 2,000 athletes raced, and the water was around 54 °F (12 °C). First team finisher took 2:55; one woman placed third in her age group. Tone is celebratory.

  • Calls it one of the toughest non-drafting Olympic-length races anywhere. Cold, wavy swim off a ferry, technical bike with lots of climbing and descending, then a varied run over sand, trail and stairs. Describes it as gruelling but rewarding.

  • Race news from the wet, foggy 2022 edition. Water was about 57 °F (14 °C) with a strong current that demanded constant sighting. Rain made the hilly bike harder. Winning times were 2:01:36 (men) and 2:15:22 (women), slow for the length of the course.

  • Slowtwitch: Escape From Alcatraz Race RecapRaced 2023 · article · Positive

Elite racer's 2023 account. The start was farther from shore than the year before and the current faster, so the swim was long (some Strava files over 3 km (1.9 mi) / 1.9 mi). Bike has punchy hills, technical corners and speed bumps; gels are not allowed. Run mixes road, trail and the steep sand ladder, with an early shuttle and boat schedule.

  • Course guide. Bay water sits around 55 °F (13 °C), mornings are foggy and cold. Bike is 18 mi (29 km) with about 1,500 ft (457 m) of climbing on rough, technical roads. Run has about 1.5 mi (2.4 km) flat, a climb to the bridge, then 400 sand steps. Advises skipping a rental car because parking is hard.

  • First-timer in 2026. New staff-controlled start sends small groups off every 5 to 10 seconds, which he found far safer than the old free-for-all. Swim was challenging but fairly calm, check-in was smooth, weather was good. Notes new owner (Mari Group) after IMG sold its sports division. Bucket list ticked.

“It was a great day for racing in perfect weather”

  • Carson Now: Asa Morway tops 18-19 age divisionRaced 2026 · article · Positive

Local story on the 7 June 2026 edition, the 40th. About 12,000 people entered the lottery for around 1,500 individual slots plus 250 relay teams from 68 countries. Bus from Marina Green to Pier 3, ferry, then a swim in 'frigid' water back to Marina Green. An 18-19 age group winner finished in about 2:42.

  • News feature on the 2025 swim start. Athletes describe a chaotic boat jump where people kept leaping while others were in the water; one competitor was left paralysed (headline and teaser read; full article is paywalled). A follow-up says the 2026 edition changed ownership and the start format.

“I looked up at the boat for help, but people were still jumping.”
