What racers and reviewers say
- Lesser is More blog, Race Report: General Smallwood TriathlonRaced 2008 · blog · Mixed
Raced the Olympic in 2:44:30 under the old organiser in June. Water was 85 °F (29 °C), so no wetsuit, with murky water and clinging weeds. Exit led to a roughly 0.25 mi (400 m) uphill run to transition. The bike left the park on a short steep climb, then steady hills, though he PR'd at 20.4 mph (32.8 km/h). The run was hilly, partly on roots, gravel and sand, with mile markers only at miles 1 and 4 and a course description of "fast out and back" that did not match.
“Attacked by the Swamp Thing sans wetsuit.”

A first triathlon in 105 °F (41 °C) heat, finishing 3:37:00. The bay looked calm but had green seaweed; she panicked in the warm-up swim but was fine once racing. T1 was a long run on concrete; the bike started with big hills then rollers; the run was hilly and mostly unshaded, and aid every mile helped. About 50 people were pulled for heat exhaustion. Volunteers iced finishers. She called it one of the hardest things she had done. July heat; April is much cooler.
“It was not ideal for my first triathlon.”

A DC Tri Club member raced the Mid-Atlantic Club Championships in 105 °F (41 °C) heat and 88 °F (31 °C) water. She found SetUp Events well organised, but the swim crowded with kicks, heavy seaweed and a course some thought long, plus a long transition run. The bike was fine (25 mi / 40 km in 1:20). The run had a big hill then unshaded rolling road before a shaded campground and a finish line past a covered bridge; ice bath and misting tent helped.
“SetUp Events had everything well organized.”

The most useful recent report: the Olympic under Kinetic in light rain and cool air, with a chilly time trial swim off the dock that was not choppy and easy to sight; the time trial start kept buoys uncrowded. The bike rolled throughout, the 10 km (6.2 mi) was two loops of road and some off-road trail, and volunteers and spectators were energetic. EMS crews provided water safety. He praised Kinetic's course layout, staff and atmosphere in his second event with them.
“thoroughly impressed from start to finish”
