Hagg Lake Triathlon and Trail Festival
Gaston (Henry Hagg Lake), United States · July · Independent (WHY Racing Events)
Why people love it
- One of the oldest US triathlons, 45 editions, with sprint, duathlon, aquabike and trail runs the same weekend
- Bike loop around a forested reservoir with little traffic; a 2023 podium finisher called it one of his prettiest
- About 40 percent of the 2023 field were first-timers; the mood is friendly and relaxed
- Camping at the venue; race-morning packet pickup from 7 am, parking $7
- Sheltered reservoir swim, about 22 to 24 °C (72 to 75 °F) in summer, wetsuit optional
Watch out for
- Hilly bike and run: nonstop short climbs and a half-mile (0.8 km) pitch near 10 percent, taken twice at Olympic
- Not a PR course; posters in 2006 and 2012 warned first-timers about the hills
- Date moves between June and August; 2027 is listed for 7 August
- Rural venue, 47 km (29 mi) from Portland airport; few aid stops and toilets
- Wave starts can mean being kicked while passing earlier waves (2018 recap)

What racers and reviewers say

Locals told a nervous first-timer this is no PR course: nonstop short hills on the lake loop, one half-mile (0.8 km) climb of about 10 percent that Olympic riders repeat on loop two, then fast 30+ mph (48 km/h) descents. The run starts with a steep hill out of transition and finishes uphill. Everyone still called it fun and scenic.
“You aren't going to be setting any PR's there”

Posters preparing for the 2007 USAT national championships describe a rolling lake loop with many short climbs, one flat stretch across the dam and one steep pitch after the turnaround. Traffic is near zero because the road goes nowhere but the lake. One poster hoped for a gravel sweep before race day.

A mid-June club swim measured about 65 to 68 °F (18 to 20 °C (68 °F)) with cool cloudy air of 55 to 60 °F (13 to 16 °C (61 °F)). Most wore full wetsuits, a few swam sleeveless or without. Another local said the lake is not generally cold and he swims it suit-free in summer.

An Olympic finisher was shocked by the constant up and down, while veterans called it a fun, pretty course that just suits stronger cyclists and trail runners. One said fit athletes lose only a few minutes against a pancake-flat Olympic.

A recap of the 36th edition. The lake was 71 °F (22 °C), the swim course well marked, but a last-wave start meant being kicked while passing slower swimmers. Bike and run were hilly with a steep climb out of transition. Awards started nearly on time, results were up by 10:30 am, and the expo had coffee and music.
