Why people love it

  • Huge city-centre event with grandstands at the Rathausmarkt finish and crowds of well over 100,000 in 2018
  • Flat, closed city bike course on very good asphalt, per the organiser
  • Sprint is a good first race: 500 m (0.31 mi) swim in 2022 in a calm inner lake
  • Test swim the day before; swim, transition and finish are all central
  • Hamburg Airport is 12 km (7.5 mi) away by S-Bahn

Watch out for

  • Swim goes through a poorly lit tunnel of about 40 m (131 ft); exit steps can be slippery
  • Transition is over 500 m (1,640 ft) long, and bike turns are tight 180-degree ones
  • Weather ranged from sunny to wet; 2027 moves to September, so expect 12 to 20 °C (54 to 68 °F)
  • Central hotels fill up, and the 2027 date is Finals week; exact open-race days are not yet published
  • Sprint swim was 500 m (0.31 mi) in 2022 but 750 m (0.47 mi) is quoted elsewhere; check the guide

What racers and reviewers say

  • A repeat racer on his tenth Hamburg edition. His wife set a sprint PB of 1:36 on Saturday; he did the Olympic distance in 2:28:21 on Sunday, with splits of 25 min swim, 1:13 bike, 41 min run. Wind made the bike harder.

  • A British age grouper recalls cold, brown Binnenalster water roughened by a north wind, a slow transition among 2,400 racked bikes on Ballindamm, a fast technical bike and a run lengthened by transition. Loud crowds helped on the last kilometre.

    “a really tough race”

    Miranda Harris
  • Third-person account of a 2007 age-group world championship race: a pontoon start into the Binnenalster, wetsuits, a flat and technical bike with eight sharp turns per lap, and a run of four loops with turnarounds. Format was different then (8 bike laps).

  • hdsports (Hamburg Wasser World Triathlon 2018)Raced 2018 · article · Positive

About 5,000 age groupers started the Saturday sprint and about 4,800 the Sunday Olympic, in sunny 25 °C (77 °F) weather. Around 120,000 spectators on Saturday and 130,000 on Sunday. Organisers reported no problems and were very satisfied.

  • About 12,000 athletes and up to 150,000 spectators. The sprint day was wet and the Olympic day had changeable weather, but the atmosphere around the Binnenalster stayed excellent. The event holds a World Triathlon gold sustainability certificate.

  • Preview describing the open races as a sprint for beginners and an Olympic race for racers, with swims in the Binnenalster and Außenalster, a flat but technical bike past the Speicherstadt and a winding run finishing on the Rathausmarkt. Free grandstands at the finish.

  • About 10,000 participants, billed as the largest triathlon by starters. Notes that the technical course means the swim, transition, bike and run all need to work. Free finish-area access for spectators.

  • Guide for the IRONMAN on the same water and streets: typical Alster water 17 to 22 °C (63 to 72 °F), wetsuits almost always legal, sheltered inner basin with no current, airport 20 minutes by S-Bahn, parking paid and limited, Neustadt and Altstadt hotels closest. Not a short-course report.
