Why people love it

  • Swim starts at the castle loggia in a sheltered lake of about 15 ha (38 acres)
  • Racers have praised the organisation, marshals and volunteers over many years
  • Starter, super sprint and sprint races give newcomers a way in
  • Event village with live music, and a finish beside the lake
  • Gatwick is 25 km (15 mi) away, with stations nearby

Watch out for

  • Bike is never flat: climbs start 2 km (1.2 mi) in, and the Olympic does two laps
  • Run is mostly off-road with gravel and a steep start. Slippery when wet.
  • The 2024 swim was cancelled for water quality after heavy rain
  • Car parks are in fields, about 1 km (0.6 mi) from registration
  • Lake is murky and about 17 °C (63 °F) in late September

  • Castle Race Series: Hever Castle 2024 reportRaced 2024 · article · Mixed

Poor water conditions after heavy rain led to the swim being cancelled; triathletes did duathlons instead. The Olympic became a 5.2 km (3.2 mi) run, 40 km (25 mi) bike and 10 km (6.2 mi) run for over 500 athletes. Organiser says athletes adapted well.

  • Castle Race Series: Hever Castle 2023 reportRaced 2023 · article · Positive

Lists the full weekend: sprint formats on Saturday, Olympic and Gauntlet half-iron on Sunday, over 6,000 athletes and supporters. No problems noted; a spectator found the swim exit from the loggia electric.

  • Castle Race Series: Hever Castle 2022 reportRaced 2022 · article · Positive

Season-finale report after Friday downpours; the weekend was dry and cool. Describes undulating Kent bike roads, laps of the grounds on the run, record numbers and a festival feel with live music. Says the shorter sprints suit newcomers.

  • Racecheck: Hever Castle Triathlon SeriesRaced 2014 · aggregator · Positive

Rated the event very highly: superbly organised, easy sign-up and quick registration, grass racking and a good briefing. Warns the swim is cold, the bike hilly on small unclosed roads, the run mixed with a steep first 500 m (1,640 ft) and gravel, and the car park is about a 15 min (1 km (0.6 mi) / 0.6 mi) walk from registration.

    “superbly organised”

  • Elite preview for the Olympic: tinted goggles for sun glare, a slippery loggia entry, a first climb within a couple of km, steep hills on a two-lap bike, a mostly off-road run that is tough over two laps, and a long run into a maze-like T1.

  • the5krunner: Hever Gauntlet triathlon reportRaced 2016 · blog · Positive

Half-iron race on the same site. Murky shallow lake at 17 °C (63 °F) with a narrow final channel, a stony run to T1, never-flat roads with traffic stopped by organisers, and a mostly trail run where many walked. Organisation and volunteers were very good.

  • Championship half-iron. Warm non-wetsuit lake, tricky sighting early and a narrow winding exit section; two-lap bike with about 1,450 m (4,760 ft) over 90 km (56 mi) and many short climbs; hilly trail run adding roughly 30 min to a half marathon. Well marshalled; T2 hooks were unnumbered.

  • Series finale report: 38-acre (15 ha) lake swim, 20 km (12.4 mi) bike circuit through the High Weald with one lap for sprint and two for Olympic, run around the estate to a finish by the lake. A series champion said he loved all four races he entered.

    “loved all four races”
