What racers and reviewers say

  • A first half-iron at the same October festival and venue, so only the setting carries over: a big lake swim much colder than the predicted 21 °C (70 °F), a muddy, unlit transition field, hard climbs on the run and shortages of water and food after the finish. He still called it punishing but rewarding. Organisation has presumably changed since.

  • Slowtwitch forum: Montauk Mighty Man resultsRaced 2005 · forum · Positive

Short 2005 thread after the race. Posters called the run brutal, noted a bike course past the harbour with a boat being moved across the road, and said conditions were perfect with little wind. They found it well run for such a hard course.

  • A high blue-green algae reading in Fort Pond led the organiser to cancel the swims the Friday before. Sprint, Olympic and half-distance races became run-bike-run duathlons, with 769 of about 900 registrants finishing (299 Olympic, 284 sprint). Athletes were disappointed but accepted it as safer; most liked the duathlon.

    “better safe than sorry”

    East Hampton Star
  • High bacteria levels again cancelled the Fort Pond swims, leaving bike and run only: 117 Olympic starters and 138 sprint finishers. The Olympic winner finished in 1:43:20 and said you had to start hard on the bike; the fourth-place finisher missed the swim.

    “I missed it”
