What racers and reviewers say

  • Organiser notice for the 11 Oct 2026 race: city lifeguards cancelled the swim before the start because of rain and a king tide. Athletes did a 1.9 km (1.2 mi) out-and-back run instead, then the usual bike and run. Entry fees were not refunded.

  • Official pages list the International as about 1,000 m (3,280 ft) swim, 34 km (21.1 mi) bike, 9 km (5.6 mi) run (capped at 300 athletes) and the Sprint as 500 m (1,640 ft), 17 km (10.6 mi), 5 km (3.1 mi). Packet pickup is Friday or Saturday, or race morning with a fee. Transition and swim start are at Ventura Cove, with parking and finish at Bonita Cove across the road.

  • Racers in 2005 described a big, popular race whose rack space fills early, so people checked bikes in overnight with security. Several called it their first triathlon or yearly season finale. They debated going without a wetsuit for the short swim, and one said the bike loop was shortened that year.

“We love this race. It was the first tri I ever did.”

Slowtwitch posters (mmfred, bcreager, grumpy and others)
  • Post-race comments: finishers called out good swims and bikes and weak runs, one forgot a race number and ran back for it, and another noted the bike course was cut short. Tone is friendly and age-group focused, with plenty of hardware in small age groups.

  • Guide to the World Triathlon San Diego age-group race on the same cove and island, a different event. It gives cove water as 17.8 °C (64 °F), calls the bike fast but technical with five 180-degree turns, and says about 80% of the run is flat, water-side and shadeless.

  • Student report from a different race (UCSD Tritonman) on Fiesta Island: a cold, rainy morning where the swim was cancelled and replaced by a second run, with muddy transitions. Useful as a precedent for how wet October-to-spring mornings can change races here.

  • Title sponsor's own blog, so promotional. It says the race sells out every year, the 2024 edition was so full that people tried to bandit the course, and finishers got to ring a gong at an awards party. It also stresses the 1974 birthplace-of-triathlon history.

Tourism listing pitches the race at beginners: a mini distance, swim buddies for newer triathletes, free weekly training groups, and a duathlon or aquathlon for people who would rather not swim. Promotional, with no athlete reviews attached.
