Why people love it

  • Flat, closed-lane loops around an island park make a fast bike course.
  • A mostly downstream river swim with a time-trial start gives a boost.
  • Detroit skyline views; the organiser says the super sprint and sprint suit first-timers.
  • The Michigan championship repeats the course on Labor Day weekend.

Watch out for

  • Two transitions about 1.6 km (1 mi) apart, so plan the morning.
  • The Olympic bike measures about 35 to 38 km (22 to 23.5 mi), not 40 km (24.9 mi).
  • Drinks ran out for slower athletes in the heat in 2022.
  • The river current and turn buoys can be rough; wetsuit rules change with temperature.
  • Most athlete reports are from 2007, 2016 and 2022.

What racers and reviewers say

  • Slowtwitch forum: Motor City RRRaced 2007 · forum · Positive

Olympic report from the June 2007 race: clean, clear river and a sheltered course with one awkward turn buoy in the current, four dull but well-paved bike loops on the Grand Prix roads, and a shady run with an aid station about every mile. Finisher PB of 2:23. Complaints: two transitions about a mile apart, thin aid station staffing and park cleanliness; friendly volunteers and perfect weather.

    “perfect weather, clean clear water”

    Slowtwitch poster
  • May 2017 thread with regulars. Most of the swim is downstream and gives a big boost, although one calls the river rough. The bike is a flat 5.5 mi (8.9 km) closed-lane loop with some debris and potholes and a headwind side. 2016 had serious organisation problems after an IndyCar race clashed with the date; the organiser apologised and moved the race a week. A volunteer calls it safe and well run.

  • RaceEntry race reviewsRaced 2022 · aggregator · Mixed

The only RaceEntry review (4.0 of 5 overall, course 5.0, organisation 3.5). Loved the fast, fun Belle Isle course but says water and sports drink stopped being served to slower athletes in the heat, leaving the last 5 km (3.1 mi) dry; wooden finisher medals and leftover post-race food also drew complaints.
