Why people love it
- Breakwater-protected harbor swim; the middle is 0.6 to 0.9 m (2 to 3 ft) deep, so you can stand.
- Time trial start, kayaks to hold and lifeguards suit nervous swimmers.
- Flat, fast courses: Olympic bike gains 123 m (403 ft), the run only 13 m (42 ft).
- One transition and race-morning packet pickup; Saturday Olympic plus Sunday Sprint makes a double weekend.
- Small waterfront town with harbor-side food; racers describe friendly volunteers and spectators.
Watch out for
- Bike roads stay open to traffic with police presence, and there is no aid station on the bike.
- Wind off the bay can be strong for long stretches on the flat farm roads.
- Remote: about 110 km (68 mi) from BWI, no marina parking, thin local lodging that fills early.
- June water ranged 17 to 28 °C (63 to 82 °F); wetsuit rules vary year to year.
- Learn the swim finish: one 2022 athlete swam about 800 m (0.5 mi) extra. Exit is by ladder.

What racers and reviewers say
- Jen's Gotta Tri blog, Rock Hall International TriRaced 2014 · blog · Positive
A returning triathlete finished the Olympic in 4:14:51 after a long break. She found the site small, the swim start a 1/4 mile (400 m) walk, a two-loop swim with sun glare, and a long walk from the water to transition. The bike was not flat: plenty of small hills and a steep climb right after a sharp turn, about 113 ft (34 m) of gain, then flat. The run was two loops of long straight out-and-backs with friendly spectators. No hotel was close, so she carpooled 2.5 h from Fairfax.
“everyone is just so nice!”
- Full Circle Endurance coach blog, athlete race recapRaced 2022 · blog · Mixed
A coach recaps two athletes at the June 4, 2022 Olympic. Water was 82 °F (28 °C), so wetsuits were not allowed for awards. One athlete misjudged the swim finish and swam about 800 m (0.5 mi) extra but took ownership, then rode and ran well. The other won her age group by five seconds. Written from the coach's side, not a full course review.
“Neil got a little confused about where the swim finish was.”
- Slowtwitch forum threadRaced 2013 · forum · Positive
In a 2015 thread about the Waterman's Half, a poster who raced the Rock Hall Olympic two years earlier calls it a great place to race and quite flat. Others at the same marina say the bike is pancake flat (under 1,000 ft / 305 m over 56 mi / 90 km) but with long wind stretches and a 3 mi (4.8 km) crushed stone section, the swim is protected with minimal chop, and the run is very flat with excellent support.
“Rock Hall was a great place to race.”
