Why people love it

  • Fast bike on smooth, almost traffic-free Arsenal roads past NASA test stands and Army displays
  • 1,500 m (0.93 mi) river swim with kayaks and safety staff on the water
  • Time-trial style start for most athletes, so less swim contact
  • Barbecue at the finish; Huntsville has plenty of hotels and restaurants

Watch out for

  • Late-August heat, highs near 31 °C (88 °F); race director says cramps are the usual run problem
  • Racing on Redstone Arsenal needs visitor gate registration; sort it out when you sign up
  • Water temperature and wetsuit rules are not published; expect a warm river swim
  • Few racers have written about it, and the one forum thread is about ten years old
  • Hotels are 5 to 10 km (3 to 6 mi) away; few spectators on a military base

What racers and reviewers say

  • Posters who raced in 2014 to 2016 call Rocketman very well run, with a flat, fast out-and-back bike on good roads and a mostly path-based run. Starts are time-trial style apart from a roughly 60-person elite wave. One racer found the August heat not that bad and would return; local competition at the front is strong.

    “definitely recommend”

    Slowtwitch posters (jsmith and others)
  • Army write-up of the 2024 race: 1,500 m (0.93 mi) swim in the Tennessee River, 40 km (25 mi) bike past test ranges and NASA test stands, 10 km (6.2 mi) run through bunkers. A local photographer praised the setting, the Army displays and how well the race is run, and said the almost empty roads make it unusually safe. Barbecue was served at the finish.

    “an incredible race”

U.S. Army (Redstone Arsenal public affairs)
  • The Redstone Rocket: Rocketman 2024 reportRaced 2024 · article · Positive

Local paper report on the 2024 race with 106 athletes, run by the Huntsville Tri Club from the south end of the Arsenal. Light traffic made the bike effectively closed. Volunteers were called great; the winner's time was 2:07 and the first woman finished in 2:18.

    “great volunteers”

    The Redstone Rocket
  • Report on the 2026 race (30 August) with more than 140 triathletes. The bike was fast, with little traffic and mostly good tarmac, and the winner found it the hardest leg. The race director said heat and cramps are the yearly run problems; a few swimmers got help from kayakers, but there have been no major incidents in four years on the Arsenal. The anthem sound system failed, so it was sung unaccompanied.
