Why people love it

  • Thames swim past Windsor Castle, with a dedicated beginners wave
  • Run finishes on the Long Walk toward the castle, with the finish on closed roads
  • Over 170 first-timers joined the beginners wave in 2018
  • Wetsuit hire is sold by the organiser
  • Heathrow is about 15 km (9 mi) away, and trains run from London to Windsor

Watch out for

  • Bike is on open roads; follow the Highway Code
  • The river swim has current, murky water, a crowded start and a narrow exit
  • The Olympic run climbs Castle Hill three times
  • Windsor rooms are pricey on a June weekend; Slough, Egham and Maidenhead are alternatives
  • Few recent athlete reports; the sprint bike is quoted as 20 or 22 km (12.4 or 13.7 mi)

What racers and reviewers say

  • Ranks Windsor first of ten UK Olympic races. Praises the Thames swim past the castle, a scenic countryside bike and a run finishing on the Long Walk with three Castle Hill climbs. Calls it a good course for a personal best and notes it usually sells out.

  • A pool swimmer found the Thames very different from lane swimming: current, poor visibility and a crowded start made sighting hard. Snippet only; the page itself blocked fetching.

  • One poster says the start is crowded and the swim exit narrow, with floating debris in the river. A related thread asks whether the bike is hilly or flat and has no real answer. Snippet only.

  • Organiser write-up of the 28th edition: sunny day, over 2,500 triathletes, a beginners wave of over 170 first-timers, run past the castle and along the Long Walk, no problems reported. Promotional source, treated with caution.

  • Wikipedia: Royal Windsor TriathlonRaced 2025 · aggregator · Positive

Gives the course layout (Thames out and back, open-road bike, Great Park run), 3,000 to 3,500 competitors, seven British Triathlon Federation event-of-the-year awards and the 2012 duathlon switch when the Thames was unsafe.
