Why people love it

  • Sea swim from Shoebury Common; the 2025 route was one-way and tide-assisted
  • Flat seafront run: the sprint is two laps totalling 5 km (3.1 mi)
  • Flat bike: 86 m (282 ft) of climbing over the 40 km (24.9 mi) standard
  • Marshals and volunteers drew praise in 2025 reviews

Watch out for

  • Swim can be choppy, and the tide shaped the route in 2017 and 2025
  • Bike in and out and the run exit confused some racers in 2025
  • 2024 racers reported lost timing chips and extra admin fees
  • No bike mechanical support on the course

RTC Events shows 4.7 out of 5 from 34 reviews, most from July 2025. Racers call it well organised and friendly, with strong marshals, and say it suits first-timers. The swim was one-way, tide-assisted and choppy. Repeated complaints: heavy traffic and turns across traffic on the bike, unclear bike in and out and run exit near the beach, and weak announcements.

    “Choppy, challenging but enjoyable.”

RTC Events participants (Karolina C., Paul S., Tracy R., Nicola M. and others)
  • Racecheck (11 reviews)Raced 2024 · aggregator · Mixed

Racecheck shows 3.98 out of 5 from 11 reviews, 7 of them from the first edition in 2017. Early racers liked the friendly staff and run but flagged poor bike marshalling and short or tidal swims. 2024 racers say it is declining, with timing chips falling off, no splits and admin fees on top of entry.

    “Flimsy timing chips fell off.”
