What racers and reviewers say

  • Bucks County Herald (Wayne Fish, 'On the Run')Raced 2026 · article · Positive

A veteran age-group winner with about ten Steelman titles describes closed, smooth Route 563 swept before race day, a rolling bike she finds challenging but rewarding, and a mostly shaded out-and-back lake run. She likes the 70 °F-plus (21 °C (70 °F)-plus) clean water and credits the race director for thorough online briefings. Sold out well ahead with 1,000+ expected.

“the lake is beautiful – mostly clean and clear”

Wayne Fish (quoting age-group champion Nancy Smith)
  • Photo story from the 22nd edition on 2 August 2026: sunrise swim in Lake Nockamixon, a tough climb to start the bike, sprint relays, and finishers cooling off with cold towels and water in the heat. The overall Olympic winner finished in 1:51:49.

  • FlyingFishHockey (Wayne Fish) race previewRaced 2021 · article · Positive

Preview of the 17th Steelman, with about 800 entrants sold out after attendance dipped to roughly 500 in 2018. A veteran racer calls the hills a rolling roller coaster and the director credits an athlete-first approach. The swim moved to a self-seeded start every 10 s instead of a mass start; the closed 25 mi (40 km) bike was newly paved.

    “It’s a roller-coaster up and down.”

Wayne Fish (quoting Nancy Smith and director Dave Michener)
  • Bucks County Herald (Wayne Fish) athlete profileRaced 2023 · article · Positive

A fast local racer who finished 2022 second on the bike at a 24.6 mph (39.6 km/h) average calls Steelman the best course he has raced and easy to navigate. He says Route 563 is hard but not intimidating for newcomers, and that the run was really hot, forcing a brief sit-down.

“I just think it’s the best course out there”

    Wayne Fish (quoting Nick Radziul)
