Why people love it

  • Flat, fast bike and run on suburban and rural roads
  • Calm lake swim in waves from a beach start at Olander Park
  • Ohio State Championship race, with beer at the finish
  • One venue: park at Olander and walk to transition and finish

Watch out for

  • Lake is warm, about 27 °C (81 °F), so wetsuits are rarely legal
  • A 2010 racer faced a 16 km (9.9 mi)/h (10 mph) headwind on the bike; 2011 was rained on all race
  • Olympic swim loops nearly the whole lake and can feel long
  • Few racers have written about it; the two race reports are from 2010 and 2011
  • Olympic entry was limited to Athena and Clydesdale athletes in a 2024 listing; check current rules

What racers and reviewers say

  • Jeanne (personal blog): 2010 Sylvania OlympicRaced 2010 · blog · Positive

Race report from a repeat racer two weeks after IRONMAN Lake Placid. The clockwise lake loop covers almost the whole lake in water warmer than the air, the bike is flat with a headwind outbound, and the run is flat. She praised organisers who had nearly everything set up the day before and noted beer at the finish. She won overall.

    “KNOW what they're doing”

    Jeanne
  • A first sub-3-hour Olympic for the writer, in rain for the entire race. Wave starts with a cannon, a crowded swim start, and a slick transition area after a crash; he also noted bikes racked carelessly in his space cost him time. Happy with a large PR and a fast bike.

  • Newspaper photo set of the 2013 race showing a beach start at Olander Park with different coloured caps by category and sprint swim waves for over-40 men. Confirms wave starts and a beach start in the lake.
