Why people love it

  • 300 m (328 yd) pool swim with individual start times, so no open-water nerves
  • Marshals and a calming briefing praised in almost every review
  • Climb to Hardy's Monument: 253 m (830 ft) over 21 km (13 mi), scenic and hard
  • Two flat laps at Poundbury, about 41 m (136 ft) of climbing
  • Race-morning registration and one transition at the sports centre

Watch out for

  • The bike leg was cancelled in October 2024 for Storm Ashley; autumn dates carry weather risk
  • No parking at the centre: use Thomas Hardy car park and allow 15 extra minutes
  • Open roads and junctions; motorbike officials enforce a 12 m (39 ft) draft zone
  • Enter an accurate 300 m (328 yd) swim time or the start order suffers
  • The last swim wave started 30 minutes late in April 2024

What racers and reviewers say

  • Eventrac shows 4.9/5 on a headline count of 2,699 ratings, but 100 written reviews across spring and autumn editions from April 2024 to May 2026 are readable. Nearly every one praises the marshals, the briefing that settles nerves, and the pool set-up. The bike is called scenic but tough because of the climb to Hardy's Monument. The October 2024 bike leg was cancelled in Storm Ashley and entrants backed the decision. Organiser's own review system, so the sample leans positive.

“Marshals everywhere needed, all happy and encouraging.”

    Eventrac participants
  • Eventrac review, Steve W. (2026)Raced 2026 · aggregator · Positive

A second-time sprinter who liked the pool format because lane counting is not needed. Calls the bike fantastic, with the climb to Hardy's Monument hard but enjoyable, and the run great.

  • Eventrac review, Linda W. (2026)Raced 2026 · aggregator · Positive

Finds it not intimidating for beginners with a beautiful bike ride. One suggestion: station more marshals in the final mile into the sports centre, where route choices confused her tired brain.

  • Eventrac review, Nichola R. (2024)Raced 2024 · aggregator · Positive

Her first Dorchester event in October 2024 had the bike element pulled because of poor weather. She still rated it an enjoyable first triathlon with fab marshals and called the cancellation the right call.

  • Eventrac reviews, Mike W. and Jules R. (2024)Raced 2024 · aggregator · Positive

Two entrants from the storm-hit October 2024 edition. One praised communication and marshals under the most challenging conditions; the other liked the run's mix of road and track and backed the call to cancel the bike.

  • Eventrac review, Joe G. (2024)Raced 2024 · aggregator · Positive

April 2024 entrant who called the day perfectly organised and friendly despite the weather. Only feedback: the last swim wave started 30 minutes behind the posted time because of the gaps between time-trial starters.

  • Eventrac review, Roisin M. (2024)Raced 2024 · aggregator · Positive

A less experienced triathlete who found the course challenging but achievable on a cold, damp April day. Transition marshals explained how to set up, and information before the event was ample.

  • Eventrac review, anonymous entrant (2024)Raced 2024 · aggregator · Positive

Said the bike ride was tough for someone new to the sport but left a huge sense of achievement. Another April 2024 entrant advised driving the bike course in advance to scout it and see the countryside.
