What racers and reviewers say

  • Cape May MagazineRaced 2015 · blog · Positive

First-person sprint report after a panicky earlier triathlon: storms delayed boarding, then cleared. The jump was less scary than expected, the current helped the swim, residents cheered with cowbells and hoses, and a few blocks of the run were heavy sand. Praises volunteers and organisation; a promotional feature so tone is glowing.

  • Philadelphia InquirerRaced 2017 · article · Positive

2017 feature: about 1,700 athletes, both distances full, jump of about 12 ft (3.7 m) with 4 to 5 at a time and a photographer. Swim runs close to a mile back to shore with strong currents; courses closed to traffic past vineyards and bird sanctuaries; residents hose down athletes in heat. Three athletes call the jump nerve-wracking and the race world-class.

“nerve-wracking and exciting at the same time”

    Inquirer staff
  • SlowtwitchRaced 2014 · article · Positive

Second-year report: 1,208 of 1,500 entrants started and about 35 percent were first-timers. Race director offered free deferrals, a sports psychologist was on hand, and non-jumpers could still bike and run (a policy later dropped). Author compares it to bucket-list swims like Alcatraz and says it takes confidence in the water.

  • Cooke Cape MayRaced 2014 · article · Positive

Second-year local news: about 1,500 athletes, jump of about 10 ft (3 m) from the MV Twin Capes, bike through vineyards and back roads, finish on the terminal boardwalk with thousands of spectators. Calls the jump one of the most unique race starts on the East Coast.

  • CapeMay.comRaced 2016 · blog · Positive

2016 local blog from a non-athlete: about 1,750 participants; swim at least a third of a mile (0.5 km) to shore, described as challenging, on a bright sunny morning. Photos only, no quotes from racers.

  • FOX 29Raced 2022 · article · Negative

June 2022: a man in his 70s died near the swim finish of the Open Water Classic, the 1 mile (1.6 km) swim-only event run alongside the triathlons, after lifeguards saw him in distress. Organiser expressed condolences; no findings on cause. A reminder that the bay swim carries real risk.
