Why people love it

  • Beach start and swim facing Snowdonia, then up through the dunes to the event village.
  • Parking next to transition is included in the entry; registration is also open on Friday evening.
  • Closed forest road for the opening bike climb, then quiet rolling Anglesey lanes with local cheering.
  • Run mixes pine forest, dunes and 1.5 km (0.9 mi) of beach sand, and reviewers loved it.
  • Sprint and Standard share the same venue and event village.

Watch out for

  • Distances are non-standard: the sprint bike is about 22.9 km (14.2 mi), the Standard bike 42.3 km (26.3 mi).
  • Sea swim can be rough, with surf and sun glare; at ebb tide the first stretch is a wade.
  • Water is about 13 to 16 °C (55 to 61 °F) in late September; practise in a wetsuit before racing.
  • A soft-sand finish and steep dune slow the run; wear trail shoes. Most reviews are 4 to 10 years old.
  • Remote site, 160 km (99 mi) from Liverpool airport; the car park fills by 07:45.

What racers and reviewers say

  • Racecheck (21 verified reviews)Raced 2022 · aggregator · Positive

Racecheck shows 4.69/5 from 21 reviews (2014 to 2022; reviews are old; 2022 average 2.67 from one cost complaint). Reviewers agree on a scenic beach-and-forest setting, well-run events, friendly marshals, parking by transition and a hard, rewarding run over dunes and sand. The sea swim is the lottery: calm in 2017, choppy in 2016 and 2019, a wade at ebb tide in 2018. Complaints: car-park queues at peak time, black swim exit flags hard to see, and one 2022 sprint entrant calling a 100-plus pound entry poor value for a water bottle, gel, socks and a slate coaster.

“Everything was so well set up and well organised.”

  • 220 Triathlon: Sandman Triathlon 2015 race reportRaced 2015 · article · Positive

Magazine report on the fifth edition: nearly 1,000 triathletes over the weekend from Llanddwyn beach. A sprint on Saturday had about 350 starters (400 m (437 yd) sea swim, 30 km (18.6 mi) bike and 5 km (3.1 mi) run at the time) and the full course on Sunday over 500. Shows how big and long-established the event is; no problems were reported apart from one injury withdrawal.

  • MadeByShape blog: Sandman Triathlon reportRaced 2016 · blog · Positive

Strong age-group racer on the longer Sunday course (10 km (6.2 mi) run, series final). He found the sea swim his weakest leg: wind and waves broke every breath, a crowded first turn after the briefing advice to swim far right, and a wrong-way detour at the last buoy. He gained places on the bike loop recced twice, finished 10th overall after cramping on the dunes and beach run, and called the organisation near perfect. The year is not stated (the page says it is about ten years old).
