Why people love it

  • Breakwater-protected harbor swim; the middle is 0.6 to 0.9 m (2 to 3 ft) deep, so you can stand.
  • Water was 19 to 24 °C (67 to 75 °F) in every recorded edition, so wetsuits have always been legal.
  • Flat, fast courses: Olympic bike gains 131 m (430 ft), the run only 12 m (39 ft).
  • Saturday Olympic plus Sunday Sprint makes a double weekend; one transition and race-morning packet pickup.
  • Cool early-October air, with highs around 22 °C (72 °F) and a small waterfront town for food.

Watch out for

  • Most written accounts cover the Half; few athletes describe the Olympic or Sprint themselves.
  • Bike roads stay open to traffic with police presence, and there is no aid station on the bike.
  • Wind off the bay can be strong for long stretches on the flat farm roads.
  • Hurricane remnants can hit in early October; one past edition was cancelled for weather.
  • Remote: about 110 km (68 mi) from BWI, no marina parking and thin local lodging that fills early.

What racers and reviewers say

  • Slowtwitch forum threadRaced 2014 · forum · Positive

In 2015 a poster who raced Waterman's the year before says the swim is in a protected area with minimal chop, the bike is pancake flat apart from a 3 mi (4.8 km) hard-packed crushed stone stretch, and the run is super flat with excellent support. Another logged under 1,000 ft (305 m) of climbing over the 56 mi (90 km) half bike and warned about long wind stretches. Called a cool little town and a recommended race.

“The run is very flat with good support.”

  • Slowtwitch forum threadRaced 2021 · forum · Positive

A 2021 thread weighs the Waterman's Half against Eagleman. Posters call it well run, "one of my favorite" Maryland races and fast but not as fast as Eagleman. Wind can matter, especially on the run into a breeze off the water, though not routinely as windy as Cambridge; the bike is "deceptively hilly" for the Eastern Shore with chip seal. One said a past edition was cancelled by hurricane weather. Local hotels are few and dated, while Kent Island, about an hour (64 km (39.8 mi) / 40 mi) away, has better options.

“It's one of my favorite ones in MD to do.”

  • Slowtwitch forum threadRaced 2022 · forum · Positive

In a 2022 thread comparing Kinetic half-distance races, two posters rank Waterman's second of three or call it a carbon copy of IRONMAN Maryland about an hour north: flat, a bit windy, with a protected harbor swim and a run through Rock Hall neighborhoods that one found not particularly interesting. Another enjoyed the town. All rate Kinetic as the best-run organiser around, and note you can do the Olympic Saturday and Sprint Sunday double.

“Waterman's is basically a carbon copy of Ironman Maryland.”

  • She raced the Olympic Saturday, 2nd woman overall, and rode the Sunday sprint in a relay. The harbor swim felt strong though she thought it ran about 100 yd (90 m (295 ft)) long with the current, and there were no jellyfish. The bike had headwinds, a pretty intense one on the sprint. She praised Kinetic for marking potholes and giving clear turn and mileage signs. Note she is a Kinetic ambassador, so she is not neutral.

    “Kinetic races are the best.”
