Why people love it

  • Original 1983 festival with on-site camping and an expo, back since 2025.
  • Clean reservoir, about 18 to 20 °C (65 to 68 °F), wetsuit legal.
  • Cal Poly student aid stations are praised in several reports.
  • Olympic and sprint start in separate waves; fields are about 1,500, far below the old peak.
  • Rolling oak-hill scenery above Lake San Antonio.

Watch out for

  • Rough, patched roads that riders called brutal; bring a sturdy bike and tyres.
  • Lynch Hill climbs over 90 m (300 ft) in the first mile, then 56 km (34.8 mi)/h (35 mph) descents.
  • Run has steep trail and off-camber sections, with little shade in the afternoon.
  • Remote park about 100 km (62 mi) from the nearest small airport; no shop on site.
  • Olympic awards ran late in 2025 and roads stayed closed until about 3 p.m.

What racers and reviewers say

  • Slowtwitch forum: So how was Wildflower?Raced 2025 · forum · Positive

About a dozen racers agreed the roads were rough, the reservoir clean and the vibe great, and almost all would return. Complaints were no real sag support, closed facilities, a long road closure, late Olympic awards and few finishers. Cal Poly aid-station volunteers and the expo drew praise; a cold front kept temperatures near 21 to 27 °C (70 to 80 °F).

  • A first-hand account of the 2025 comeback rated the weekend 9 out of 10: smooth transition, casual 8:30 start, expo by the finish, good food trucks. Negatives were rough roads on the first half of the bike, 10 dollar beers, no pro field and a small field of about 1,500.

  • Describes the return of the original organiser, the lake being nearly full after drought, new facilities and 2025 prices of 238.50 dollars for Olympic and 176.10 for the off-road sprint. Explains the history: 9,000 registrants at the peak and about 70 clubs camping.

  • Adventure Sports JournalRaced 2018 · blog · Negative

A spouse's account of the 2018 long course: a pothole 5.6 km (3.5 mi) in dislodged a competitor's aero pads, and he later collapsed with a carotid dissection. Reports nearly 1,130 m (3,700 ft) of climbing on the long bike and temperatures near 32 °C (90 °F). Mainly a warning about road quality.

  • DC RainmakerRaced 2008 · blog · Mixed

Long-course report with detail that still applies to the venue: a rough swim start, steep opening bike climb, a trail run harder than expected, kinda hot weather, camping in the park with early car alarms, Cal Poly aid stations and a very large transition.
