Why people love it

  • Fast, mostly flat 90 km (56 mi) bike on quiet roads with good surfaces for the UK
  • Scenic castle-estate run with an event village that suits spectators
  • Race run by Castle Race Series, known for friendly marshals
  • Buoys are close together on the swim, which helps sighting

Watch out for

  • Shallow, weedy pond with four laps and many turns; congestion at buoys in 2024
  • Run is stony and very muddy in rain; trail shoes needed
  • Bike feed station was thinly staffed and not all bottle hand-ups worked
  • Only a few years of history; field in the half has been small

What racers and reviewers say

  • RaceCheck: Peter R.Raced 2026 · aggregator · Mixed

Enjoyed the day, but the four-lap pond swim was hard because of low depth, weed, many turns and green buoys that blended into the trees. Small half field alongside many other events raised safety issues; first trail run at the end of a middle distance.

  • RaceCheck: Mike E.Raced 2026 · aggregator · Positive

Excellent, well-run event: well marshalled and signposted with adequate feed stations. Easy-to-navigate swim with buoys every 100-150 m (328–492 ft), a fast and flat bike with generally very good surface, a scenic and brutal run and great spectator facilities.

  • RaceCheck: AnonymousRaced 2026 · aggregator · Positive

Stunning bike and run; some cheeky hills on the run but courses suit all abilities. The swim was not clear because of depth and heat waves. Supportive marshals; only the goody bag was slim.

  • RaceCheck: Peter M.Raced 2025 · aggregator · Positive

Last to finish on the Sunday and still got nothing but encouragement, support and positivity from marshals, who cheered him in after spectators had gone home.

  • RaceCheck: AnonymousRaced 2025 · aggregator · Positive

Has now done the Gauntlet at Belvoir, Hever and Cholmondeley, all well organised but tough. Trail shoes were essential for the lovely but horribly muddy run, not road shoes as discussed at briefing.

Second time here, hot one year and rainy the next. Swim OK but very weedy with many turns, bike good with uneven marshals, and a feed station with only two people that gave him one bottle; it also sat before rough road.

  • RaceCheck: Steve C.Raced 2025 · aggregator · Mixed

Enjoyed the well-organised event. The lake was very weedy and the run was borderline unsafe on the first lap in heavy rain, with barely staying upright on downhills.

  • RaceCheck: Jack G.Raced 2025 · aggregator · Mixed

Very good event with a lovely, muddy bike course in the rain and a slippery run. Was promised a free massage and queued 20 minutes before staff said they knew nothing about it.

  • RaceCheck: AnonymousRaced 2025 · aggregator · Positive

Stunning location, very well organised, a shallow weedy lake, a flat bike course and a bog-like run in the rain. Great event but not for chasing a PB.

  • RaceCheck: Kate W.Raced 2024 · aggregator · Positive

Amazing location with quiet bike roads and beautiful run scenery; asked for more aid stations on a hot day when she became very dehydrated.

  • RaceCheck: AnonymousRaced 2024 · aggregator · Mixed

Learning points for a first event: a congested swim with short laps, a great bike but cyclists should be handed bottles, and a lovely run that is hilly and stony for tired legs.

  • RaceCheck: Edward B.Raced 2024 · aggregator · Mixed

Swim pretty bad with reeds and shallow water, intricate route causing congestion at turns and an overly high exit ramp that hurt shins. The ride was great with no complaints.
