What racers and reviewers say

  • Earth TrekkersRaced 2026 · blog · Positive

March 2026 report: 63 F (17 C) water felt warm after a heat wave but typical is 57 F (14 C), busy buoys, rough Camp Pendleton roads and a flat that cost about 50 minutes, 'Hell Hill' at mile 28, a flat run with excellent crowds and a 7-minute half-marathon PR. Enjoyed it more than expected.

    “Plan for sub-60°F water.”

  • BlondeRunnerblog · Mixed

Report: 46 F (8 C) start, 62 F (17 C) water, congestion, glare and swells that caused extra swimming and salt water, then a hilly bike and stomach trouble; finished 5:53:48, around 2,600 athletes. Camp Pendleton closed to previews. Called it disappointing but educational.

  • CyclizingRaced 2023 · blog · Mixed

2023: swim moved from the ocean to the harbor with water in the mid-50s F (13 C) and 48 F (9 C) air; his slowest swim ever, a cold T1, hills on the bike, and a run lifted by crowds on a scenic rolling course. Would avoid cold ocean starts in future.

  • TrizoneRaced 2017 · article · Positive

2017 preview: calm sheltered harbor swim with low-to-mid 60s F (16-18 C) water, a bike up the coast and into Camp Pendleton with notable hills and a fast return, and a flat 21 km (13 mi) run on The Strand ending in a spectator chute.

  • Slowtwitch forumforum · Mixed

Race-week thread: hills described as steep, one with a 12% grade, 15-20 riders fixing mechanicals roadside, pleasant air and little wind, a warmer sunnier run, and a complaint that run aid stations were broken down by mile 7-8 (km 11-13).
