What racers and reviewers say
- RaceRaves: Florian BasierRaced 2026 · aggregator · Positive
Calls the 2026 edition a professional setup: fewer docks on the swim, frequent buoys and kayaks, cleaner roads with fewer flats and live lap monitoring. Complaints: attendance dropped to about 1,400, transition felt short of volunteers, and the run has little shade or scenery.
- RaceRaves: RGarrett (2021 edition)Raced 2021 · aggregator · Mixed
2021 was very windy: the ride out felt good but the return into the wind toward the run was severe.
- RaceRaves: RGarrett (2017 edition)Raced 2017 · aggregator · Positive
Fun, challenging, spectator-friendly and a great race for first-timers with a flat out-and-back bike; swim can be choppy, bike very windy and run hot.
- Slowtwitch forum: Ironman 70.3 TexasRaced 2011 · forum · Mixed
Compares the 2010 and 2011 races: sheltered bayou swim whose conditions depend on wind, a four-loop run with many turns and heat into the mid-80s F (about 29 C). Well run, with well-spaced waves and little drafting.
“The bike course is completely exposed and offers zero blockage from the wind.”
- Slowtwitch forum: Galveston tips threadRaced 2018 · forum · Mixed
Preparation thread for April 2018: essentially flat course apart from the San Luis Pass bridge, strong variable wind (disc rear advised), excellent roads except near the toll bridge, a congested run with many tight turns and hot humid conditions. Moody Gardens rooms sold out fast; arrive early for parking and traffic.
