Why people love it

  • Solarer Berg: a Tour de France-style climb lined with tens of thousands of fans.
  • Rolling-start canal swim with no sighting, wetsuit legal in most years.
  • Smooth closed roads and a flat soft run make this a PB course.
  • Stadium finish with fireworks.
  • Huge, knowledgeable crowds the whole way.

Watch out for

  • Registration sells out in seconds; no Kona slots.
  • Very limited lodging in Roth; book up to a year ahead.
  • Venues are spread over about 35 km (22 mi) from Nuremberg; rent a car.
  • Heat and wind years can be brutal (2014, 2015, 2025). Water hit 25.3 °C (77.5 °F) in 2025.
  • Drafting on the bike, and the bike is rolling, not flat (about 1,300 m (4,270 ft) / 4,265 ft).

What racers and reviewers say

  • RaceCheckRaced 2019 · aggregator · Positive

Called it the best race he has done. Swim is an easy out-and-back in warm murky canal. Bike is smooth but hillier than expected, around 1,500 m (4,920 ft), with Greding the only steep climb and loud crowds at Solarer Berg. Lodging in Roth is limited; hotels about 10 km (6 mi) away.

“Iconic doesn't do this race justice.”

    David L.
  • Slowtwitch forumRaced 2019 · forum · Positive

Third Ironman-distance finish in 13:00 after a broken wetsuit zip forced a no-wetsuit swim in 24 °C (75 °F) water. Enjoyed the bike scenery and crowds, found the canal run tedious. Logistics from Hong Kong and an apartment 25 minutes away were stressful, but he calls Roth his Kona.

  • Slowtwitch forumRaced 2007 · forum · Positive

11:04 PB. Calm, easy-to-sight canal swim; bike hillier and more technical than expected with crosswinds; soft run surface kind to knees but less flat than advertised. Crowds carried her through. Compulsory doping test annoyed her.

  • Slowtwitch forumforum · Positive

Posters rank Roth right after Kona; waves seeded by expected time so less contact. Run supporters pacing athletes is a rules grey area with inconsistent enforcement. Nuremberg trains are limited early on race day; hotels near the station are noisy.

  • TriathleteRaced 2022 · article · Mixed

Rough personal race but still recommends Roth once. Bike is rolling and hilly not flat; narrow village corners surprise Americans. Swim waves can get crowded. Solar Hill and the stadium finish live up to hype. Registration sells out in under a minute; rent a car; only one hotel in town.

“It will still be hard and tough”

Runner-up in 2025 first appearance. Warm water made the swim wetsuit-optional; Solarberg is a no-pass zone, manhole covers near dam sections can eject bottles. Run is soft gravel, exposed, with a gradual climb near km 30 (mile 19). Rent a car, Nuremberg is 35 km (22 mi) away, book lodging early.

“Don't leave early. You won't want to miss the vibes!”

    Grace Thek
  • Pete Jacobs blogRaced 2014 · blog · Positive

First full-distance in one of Roth's hardest years: severe wind and heat, with roughly one in five starters not finishing. Mechanical issue on the bike and cramping on the run, yet she loved the many-deep crowds on Solar Hill and the family atmosphere.

  • Coach Ray Boardman / Di ChesmarRaced 2016 · blog · Positive

Personal best of 15:57. Timed waves let her draft in the swim, bike course flat and fast but with widespread drafting; the run turned hot after an overcast morning. Staying with a host family in Roth eased logistics. Fireworks stadium finish moved her to tears.

“It was a tough day out there.”

    Di Chesmar
  • Colorado TriathleteRaced 2004 · article · Positive

Fourth-place pro finish with a marathon PB. Describes smooth roads, thousands of spectators and a deafening Solarer Berg, a soft dirt canal path, and a stadium finish. Calls it a bigger, faster, better-watched event than other iron-distance races.

    “a definite must-do race”

    Michael Lovato
  • SlowtwitchRaced 2009 · article · Positive

Describes Roth as festive and emotionally powerful, with sponsor flags over the old town, pre-race feasts and fans packing Solarerberg. Compares it to a Tour de France mountain stage.

  • TriathleteRaced 2009 · article · Positive

Course preview: sighting-free counterclockwise canal swim, fast open bike course with smooth roads and no technical sections, mostly flat gravel run gentler than Frankfurt's. About 20,000 line the canal and 25,000 gather at Solarer Berg.

  • SlowtwitchRaced 2013 · article · Positive

Race coverage of the Bockel/Steffen wins with sunny pleasant weather, almost 5,000 athletes and huge crowds, especially at Solarer Berg. Entry registration queue started at 3 a.m. the next day.

  • Triathlon Magazine CanadaRaced 2015 · article · Positive

Recap of the 2015 race with a new bike course record of 4:09:13 and the largest crowds yet in the small Bavarian town.

  • Slowtwitch forumforum · Mixed

Racers weigh Nuremberg hotels (Sheraton by the station) against Airbnbs and tour packages priced about USD 1,900-3,500 for a week. A rental car or taxi helps; spectating without one is hard because swim, T2 and finish are far apart.

  • Challenge Roth officialarticle · Mixed

Organisers do not book lodging; point to tourism offices, partner hotels with athlete rates, and Rothsee glamping. Indicates demand outstrips local supply.
