What racers and reviewers say

  • Gwangju NewsRaced 2019 · article · Mixed

Racer arrived for the 2019 edition, which was cancelled on race morning because of Typhoon Tapah. She praised the swim setup and the organizers' attention to detail, hospitality, contingency planning and goodwill (finisher gear handed out anyway). Afterward she ran riverside paths along the Seomjin.

“It was a delightful and fast swim course”

    Mary Wagner
  • HMRRC Pace SetterRaced 2018 · blog · Mixed

Foggy, physical swim with leg grabbing; bike began with a long climb, ran past rice paddies with many speed bumps and a shade-free exposed highway stretch in heat near 32 °C (90 °F). Run was three loops with little shade. Volunteers were great but half-filled bottles hurt; hotel shuttles and airport shuttle provided, but food options were hard for her.

“more aggressive than any swim I'd experienced in the US”

    Katie Kurtessis McNamara
  • RacecheckRaced 2018 · aggregator · Positive

Gave 4.1 of 5. Swim is gentle with a rope along the whole course; bike has gentle hills and good surfaces; run mostly flat with stocked aid about every 1.6 km (1 mi) and impressive volunteers. Complaints: spread-out hotels and venues, limited English, scarce Western food, awkward travel from Busan or Seoul.

  • Zsombor Deak blog (70.3 Gurye)Raced 2015 · blog · Positive

Report from the 70.3 held in Gurye in 2015 (not the full distance). Cold morning and chilly water, drafting by a pack on the bike, strong run, finished 10th. Said organization was much better than the earlier Incheon race; the rural town was friendly but language was a barrier. Included for the venue only.

  • Brunch (Heedo Jeong) 2026 finisher reportRaced 2026 · blog · Positive

Second-time Gurye finisher (swim 1:25, bike 7:12, run 6:22) who struggled on the run due to low training. Highlights volunteers cheering from dawn to midnight, aid support on both bike and run, patches and medical help along the run, and the beautiful scenery. Mentions turnarounds and ups and downs on the run, plus a lit night section.
