What racers and reviewers say

  • Sean Chin blogRaced 2024 · blog · Mixed

Wetsuit-legal but murky, chaotic swim with spectators lining the canal. The toll-road bike was brutally hot, humid and windy with many crashes, flats and litter blowing across the road. Run loops past Hippie Hollow carried by the crowd; stayed at the walkable but expensive Westin.

“Heat, humidity, and strong headwind. All the fun.”

  • RaceRaves (basier.florian)Raced 2026 · aggregator · Mixed

First-timer: swim water brown and smelly but well buoyed; wetsuit-optional athletes started last. Bike had big drafting packs, littered bottles and a storm with rain and wind. Run had strong crowds but some unlit sections; cold rain at night.

  • RaceRaves (Vendsweet)Raced 2022 · aggregator · Negative

Found the unshaded interstate out-and-back bike, done twice, the hardest ride of their life, and the marathon very tough afterward. Long walk to the start; would not race again.

  • RaceRaves (RGarrett)Raced 2019 · aggregator · Positive

Repeat racer: heat rose quickly on bike and run after a cool spring. Calls it their favourite run course with plenty of support.

  • RaceRaves (svroman322)Raced 2017 · aggregator · Positive

Great event overall, but strong wind and large groups ignoring drafting rules on the bike; special needs closed well before the run cutoff.

Weather swung through heat, wind, rain, hail and cold in a single race. Called the run amazing with crowds lining the Waterway.

  • RaceRaves (jennyburden87)Raced 2015 · aggregator · Positive

Swim fine though not clear; flat fun first half of the bike, windier and hotter second half. Crowds strong except the back end of the last loop. Plenty of hotels; stayed about 1.6 km (1 mi) away with free breakfast and dinner.

  • RaceRaves (lydiaccollins 2014)Raced 2014 · aggregator · Positive

Better weather than the prior year; canal swim still shallow in places. Carpets were added to stop transition foot burns.

  • RaceRaves (lydiaccollins 2013)Raced 2013 · aggregator · Mixed

Bike a favourite: windy but fairly flat with a good finish. Canal very shallow off-centre; hot tarmac in transition burned many athletes' feet.

  • Texas Endurance NewsRaced 2021 · article · Mixed

October 2021 post-COVID edition had only ~800-900 athletes, a non-wetsuit swim and quiet Hardy Tollway. Expansion joints caused crashes; headwind southbound, no breeze northbound; heat was the main enemy.

“it was the heat that got people.”

2016 North American Championship: bike shortened to 94 miles (151 km (93.8 mi)); a severe rainstorm hit after the pros finished and the age-group race was red-flagged until it passed.
