    Théoden admired the rural river-valley scenery but found repeated steep climbs far harder than the map had conveyed. Warm, exposed late miles made the aid gaps feel long. Extra water from a friend’s supporter and friendly rivalry helped him keep moving to a finish he felt proud of.

    A 2011 full-marathon account by Charlotte Observer writer Théoden Janes. The historical course and aid arrangement may differ today. Extra water was personal roadside support, not an advertised service. Comparisons with Boston’s hills and details of other runners’ health are excluded.
