Why people love it

  • Mostly flat double loop; 22.8 percent of 1,126 finishers qualified for Boston in 2025.
  • Warm indoor wait at the Tsongas Center until minutes before the start.
  • Merrimack River stretches with fall foliage in mid-October.
  • Pace groups and water about every 3.2 km (2 mi).

Watch out for

  • Roads are not fully closed; some stretches run on tight shoulders.
  • Narrow green bridge near miles 7 to 8 (km 11 to 13) bottlenecked in 2025.
  • Porta-potty lines at the start reached 20 minutes in 2024 and 2025.
  • Few spectators outside the start, finish and Rourke Bridge; finish parking is tight.
  • Wind and rain are possible: 2011 had 24 to 32 km (19.9 mi)/h (15 to 20 mph) winds.

  • Imperfect Idealist half marathon reviewRaced 2021 · blog · Positive

Half marathon on October 17 2021 in mid-50s °F (about 13 °C (55 °F)): mostly flat, about 290 ft (88 m) gain, loved the red Aiken Street Bridge, quick packet pickup, plenty of toilets, water and Gatorade about every 2 mi (3.2 km). Few spectators and a field about half the usual size.

“The Baystate Marathon and Half Marathon is a New England favorite.”

    Lily Fang
  • Hudson Mountain Road Runners race reportRaced 2018 · blog · Positive

Winner's report (2:23:50) on a cool, blustery morning in the low 40s °F (about 5 °C (41 °F)): headwind for 7.75 mi (12.5 km), tailwind after a bridge, crosswind by mile 22 (km 35). Two loops, slight inclines on the second lap, bridges as landmarks.

“I was fairly certain it was my race to lose.”

    Scott Mindel
  • Patch recap, Nicole WadeRaced 2011 · blog · neutral

Ran 3:46:01 on October 16 2011 in cold, steady rain with 15 to 20 mph (24 to 32 km/h) winds and gusts to 40 mph (64 km/h), felt hardest in the last 10 km (6 mi). Shows the downside risk of an October New England date; little on course.

  • MarathonGuide (127 reviews, 3.7)Raced 2023 · aggregator · Mixed

Overall 3.7 from 127 reviews. The one detailed 2023 review gave 2.0 and called it probably okay for fast runners or the half only: hard parking, too few toilets, poor bridge surfaces, almost no crowd, aid closing at about 5 hours. 936 marathon finishers that year.

“Probably okay if you're a fast runner or only do the half”

  • BibRave reviewsRaced 2018, 2021 · aggregator · Positive

A 2018 reviewer said almost everything was smooth, with a small but well-run expo and warm start in the arena; a half runner liked the indoor restrooms and aid but found bag check outdoors at a truck, not inside.
