What racers and reviewers say
- RaceRaves Sugarloaf Marathon & 15K page (9 ratings)Raced 2024 · aggregator · Positive
Rated 4.0 out of 5 from 9 runners, difficulty 2.9, scenery 4.0. Most call it a fast, net-downhill river course good for Boston qualifying, with climbs around miles 8 to 10 (13 to 16 km) harder than expected. Recurring notes: few spectators and a thinned-out field after mile 12 (19 km), a remote town about 2 to 3 hours from Bangor or Portland, friendly volunteers, and shared road with traffic, a broken shoulder and diesel trucks near the end.
“The climbs from mile 8 to 10.5 were more difficult than I expected.”
- Team RunRun: Sugarloaf Marathon and 15K race report (Coach Salena Sykes)Raced 2018 · blog · Positive
A first-marathon Boston qualifier at 3:30 who rates it 5 out of 5. Point-to-point, net downhill, hardest climbs at miles 8 to 10 (13 to 16 km), with smaller rolling hills near miles 19 to 20 (31 to 32 km). Water and sports drink about every 2 miles (3.2 km), start shuttles on time, volunteers very encouraging. Road is open to traffic, spring surface can be rough, and spectators cannot follow easily. Start 0 to 4 °C (30 to 40 °F), later warming to about 16 °C (60 °F).
“Yes, I would say this is a tough course.”
- Team RunRun: Sugarloaf Marathon race report (Ben Curll)Raced 2023 · blog · Positive
Ran 3:26:45 and gives it a perfect 10. Scenic river course, hills at miles 7 to 10 (11 to 16 km), then a big drop in the last 16 miles (26 km) that can wreck quads without downhill training. Water and Gatorade every 2 miles (3.2 km), Gu at miles 9 and 17. He has run it in temperatures from the high 20s to low 60s F (about -2 to 17 °C (63 °F)). Warns lodging sells out before registration opens.
“Hands down, a 10!”
- Bangor Daily News race coverage and race director commentsRaced 2014 · article · Positive
Coverage reports the race director saying the course has a net loss of about 1,000 ft (305 m) but is not without hills: the first five miles (8 km) are flat and the next three roll. A column notes the last 16 miles (26 km) follow the Carrabassett River downhill. Describes Maine's oldest continuously run marathon.
