Why people love it

  • Wetsuit-legal lake: 17 to 24 °C (62 to 75 °F) in 2015 to 2025
  • Banked stadium-style seating overlooks the swim start, run and finish
  • Swim, transition, run and finish are all inside Lake Anna State Park
  • Race-morning packet pickup; Saturday Olympic, Sunday sprint, 20 percent off for both
  • Good pavement on the rolling bike: 286 m (939 ft) Olympic, 171.5 m (563 ft) sprint

Watch out for

  • Run starts with a steep climb out of T2; the Olympic repeats it, 99 m (324 ft) of gain
  • Early May water can be cold at 17 to 18 °C (62 to 64 °F), and mornings are cool
  • Sprint bike is 24.9 km (15.5 mi), longer than a standard 20 km (12.4 mi) sprint
  • Lodging near the park is limited; book cabins early or stay in Fredericksburg

What racers and reviewers say

  • Slowtwitch forum: Kinetic half (Lake Anna)Raced 2008 · forum · Positive

A February 2009 thread about the Half, still useful for the venue. Posters agree the organisers run a tight, well-staffed, no-frills race, roads are mostly good with a few rough patches, the bike has gentle rollers, and the park run is tougher than advertised, hilly and hot with sparse aid in early years. The early-season swim was cold (mid 50s to low 60s °F, 13 to 17 °C (63 °F)) until the date moved later.

“Setup does good races - you will find them well organised and staffed.”
