Why people love it

  • Sea swim from Second Beach, with paddleboard lifeguards, boats and kayaks on patrol
  • Bike on Park Drive in Stanley Park, closed to traffic until 11 a.m., in 9.4 km (5.8 mi) laps
  • Seawall run past First Beach and the Inukshuk to Burrard Bridge and back
  • Tri it option of 300 m (984 ft), 9 km (5.6 mi), 2.5 km (0.19, 5.6, 1.6 mi) plus first-timer seminars
  • Swim, transition and finish are all at Second Beach

Watch out for

  • Sea is 16 to 19 °C (61 to 66 °F). Wetsuits are mandatory at 15.9 °C (60.6 °F) or below.
  • The swim is replaced by a run-bike-run if water is below 12 °C (53.6 °F)
  • Mandatory Sunday bike drop-off, and bikes stay put until 11 a.m. on race day
  • Rocks near the beach and tide cut swimmers in 2017. The Olympic has a beach exit between laps.
  • Olympic bike is 37.6 km (23.4 mi), not 40 km (24.9 mi). The 2021 run was cancelled over coyote attacks.

What racers and reviewers say

  • MultiSportsCanada event page and course detailsRaced 2026 · organiser · Positive

Organiser course notes: English Bay swim from Second Beach (Olympic in two 750 m (2,460 ft) laps with a beach run between), a 4-lap or 2-lap closed bike on Park Drive, and a seawall run to a turnaround under Burrard Bridge. Wetsuit rules, a mandatory Sunday bike drop and transition seminars. Marketing and logistics, not independent opinion.

  • Two age-group winners from Pemberton and Whistler on the Olympic race. Tide going out made the swim harder, the swim triangle turned into low sun, and big rocks in the water cut people's hands and feet. The run was harder than expected with a couple of steep climbs near the overpass.

    “grassroots, nice and mellow race”

    Dan Falloon
  • News report that organisers cancelled the 2021 run inside Stanley Park after close to 40 coyote attacks since December, leaving a swim-bike aquabike unless an alternative run route was approved. Shows a site-specific risk and also describes the bike as several laps around the outside of the park.

  • Coverage of the 2008 Vancouver Triathlon and World Championships: cold water, waves and unseasonally cold air replaced the swim with a run for some age groups. One Whistler racer was called for drafting then blocking on a rough road section and appealed. Championship-year conditions, so weighted lightly.

  • Local result story for the 2011 Olympic race at Stanley Park: 1,500 m (4,920 ft) swim, 37.6 km (23.4 mi) bike and 10 km (6.2 mi) run. Gives an elite benchmark of 2:16:17 for second place; no weather or logistics detail.
