What does this score mean?

Why people love it

  • The organizer advertises a closed bike course.
  • A shorter super-sprint option is also offered.
  • Historical beginners valued volunteers and fellow-athlete encouragement.

Watch out for

  • Athlete accounts describe pre-hurricane editions; current surfaces and arrangements may differ.
  • Expect Gulf swimming, close passes and a potentially hot run.
  • One historical athlete received a contest entry; that sponsorship is disclosed.
  • Nonresort guests must carpool, park offsite and ride 2.4 km (1.5 mi) to transition.
  • Confirm bike traffic arrangements: registration says closed roads; a current host quote says limited traffic.

  • Hilary Topper

    Raced 2014 · A Triathlete’s Diary first-tri account

    Tone: Mixed

Topper finished her first triathlon with help from fellow athletes and plenty of lifeguards. She felt safe despite swim contact, but described rough bike pavement and a hot, exposed mixed-surface resort run. This is the pre-hurricane 2014 event, not a current pavement report.

  • John M. Henry

    John Henry Captiva race report

    Tone: Positive

Henry described his first complete sprint, including calm water, crowded swimming, a flat coastal bike and severe leg cramps on the resort run. Friends and volunteers encouraged him to finish. His entry was won through a sponsor contest; the undated historical account predates the current organizer and post-hurricane reopening.
