What racers and reviewers say

  • 206 ratings, 4.83 average, 2016 to 2026, Gold Awards in 2019 and 2022. Reviewers agree on excellent organisation, a festival atmosphere and a beautiful bike route past Beachy Head. The bike is hilly (86% of reviews) and the run flat and fast (87%). The sea swim is a known variable: swims were cancelled in 2024 for wind and one Olympic finisher disliked the dull run doubled up as a duathlon. 58% say ideal for beginners.

“Really well organised, with a great vibe”

    Racecheck reviewers
  • Club newsletter report from an age-group winner: first sea swim in a race with a very strong current, an undulating bike loop around Beachy Head with a flat seafront return, and a run with a steep climb (an older routing). Chip timing missed her run split. Recommended it as well organised and challenging.

    “well organised, challenging and local”

    Erica Martin
  • Event report: sprint 750 m (2,460 ft) / 18.3 km (11.4 mi) / 5 km (3.1 mi) and standard 1,500 m (4,920 ft) / 36.6 km (22.7 mi) with 680 m (2,230 ft) climbing, over Beachy Head, finishing on the Western Lawns. Over 800 competitors in good conditions, an age-group qualifier.

  • Magazine reports. 2017 describes a 600 m (1,970 ft) sea swim, 20 km (12.4 mi) bike with the Beachy Head climb and a tough hilly 5 km (3.1 mi) run. 2019 added the Olympic distance in perfect conditions. A 2018 athlete called it perhaps the toughest course in England.

“probably the toughest course in England”

    Tri247
  • Local news report: almost 1,300 athletes aged 3 to 78 on a hot, challenging Sunday 12 July; the swim was much rougher than the calm days earlier that week, according to race director Mat Dowle.
