Why people love it

  • Beach start in Jervis Bay with clear shallow water; two waves, 7:00 and 7:30 AM.
  • Out and back bike on closed roads, 20 km (12.4 mi) with 201 m (660 ft) of climbing.
  • Flat foreshore run of 5 km (3.1 mi) with 49 m (161 ft) of climbing.
  • Super sprint is 200 m (656 ft), 8 km (5 mi), 2 km (219 yd, 5 mi, 1.2 mi) for first-timers.
  • Race packs can be collected on race morning, 5:30 to 6:40 AM.

Watch out for

  • Parking in Huskisson is very limited; use a free park-and-ride shuttle that drops 120 m (394 ft) from race HQ.
  • The wetsuit rule is not published and water averages 22.9 °C (73.2 °F), so expect it may be banned.
  • A 2019 reviewer reported residents' cars on the bike roads and weak pre-event communication.
  • First-timers in 2021 found the deep open-water swim a step up from a pool.
  • Few athletes have written about the sprint; most coverage is of the long-course race.

What racers and reviewers say

  • Racecheck: Big Husky Triathlon FestivalRaced 2019 · aggregator · Mixed

Two 2019 reviews at 3.7 and 3.8 out of 5 (page average 3.8). One entered a middle-distance race and said residents live on the bike route so the roads were not fully closed. The other, a super sprint racer, called it memorable for the wrong reasons and lost a wedding ring in the water. Pre-event communication scored lowest (2.5), logistics and staff 4.0.

“Bike course has cars along it as residents live on the bike leg.”

Racecheck reviewers (Luke J., Dominic M.)
  • Goulburn Post: Goulburn residents at Big HuskyRaced 2021 · article · Positive

Club report from the 2021 edition with almost 2,500 entries. Four club members raced the 750 m (2,460 ft) sprint and nine others the super sprint, at least six of them first-timers. New triathletes were pleased with results despite their first deep open-water swim. No problems mentioned and COVID-safe measures were in place.

  • Preview with a Bathurst group on its 15th Husky. Record entries of about 6,000 and near-certain rain on all three days (95 percent chance of 15-30 mm / 0.6-1.2 in on Friday). The racer calls it a really nice place to race, well organised, with an undulating bike. Sprint starts that year were Saturday 11 AM men, 1:30 PM women.

“Huskisson is a really nice place to race.”

    Western Advocate
  • Ulladulla Times: 20th anniversaryRaced 2025 · article · Positive

February 2025 report on the 20th edition with more than 6,000 athletes, matching the post-COVID record. Coverage centres on the long-course pro race (27 pros, $21,000 purse). Describes a festive weekend atmosphere; says nothing on the sprint or on problems.

“vibrant, festive atmosphere throughout the weekend”

    Ulladulla Times
  • Slowtwitch: Salthouse and Hearn win HuskyRaced 2021 · article · Positive

Report on the long-course race (1.9 km (1.2 mi) / 1.2 mi swim, 90 km (55.9 mi) / 56 mi bike, 21 km (13 mi) / 13 mi run), so it speaks to the venue only: a swim at Sharknet Beach in Jervis Bay and a flat, scenic two-lap run. Not a sprint review; used here for the venue.
