Why people love it

  • Purpose-built Olympic rowing lake with a flat, protected swim along the shore.
  • Closed roads on the bike; Castlereagh Road is shut until 9:30 AM.
  • Sprint check-in on race morning, 6:00 to 7:15 AM, with one transition area.
  • Grandstand finish lets spectators see swim, transition and run from one spot.
  • Super sprint of 200 m (219 yd) and a mates wave suit first-timers.

Watch out for

  • The headline Nepean race is 1 km (0.6 mi), 30 km (18.6 mi), 8 km (0.62, 18.6, 5 mi): shorter than an Olympic.
  • Late-November heat: a 2010 race reached about 35 °C (95 °F), and the main race starts at 10:00 AM.
  • Wetsuits are allowed only below 22 °C (71.6 °F), checked an hour before the start.
  • Racer reports are old, from 2010 and 2015; the organiser and course changed in 2023 and 2024.
  • Parking details were not found; confirm with the organiser before race morning.

What racers and reviewers say

  • Club series race at the Penrith Regatta Centre with a record 250-plus athletes. Sprint and enticer swims run parallel to the lake shore, the bike is on closed roads and the run is an accurate two-lap 5 km (3.1 mi). Hot weather did not hurt turnout; a later race that season was cancelled for poor weather.

  • TriZone: Mick Maroney on the Nepean Super SprintRaced 2010 · article · Positive

Writer's own account of the 2010 super sprint in the regatta stadium in about 35 °C (95 °F) heat. Dive start from a pontoon, 300 m (328 yd) swim, then bike and run laps in front of a crowd. Called the buoy turns a bit of a boxing match, finished top ten and called it a great day.

“A great day and lots of fun!”

    Karl Hayes
  • TriZone: Nepean Triathlon ushers in a new eraRaced 2023 · article · Mixed

Explains that the volunteer committee closed the event in 2023 over a dissolved partnership and flood damage at the regatta centre, and that Elite Energy took over from October 2023. New course uses Castlereagh Road and drops the short loops; adds a Classic and an Enticer super sprint.

“Our team is thrilled to be part of triathlon history.”

    Karl Hayes
  • March 2025 report on the Australian Super Sprint Championship at the venue, raced in heavy rain. The winning woman called the atmosphere amazing with crowds even in the weather. Covers the 250 m (820 ft) / 10 km (6.2 mi) / 2.5 km (273 yd / 6.2 mi / 1.6 mi) format, not the sprint.

    “Amazing, even with the weather.”

    Triathlon Australia
  • Tourism description calling the venue the Olympic rowing course, with a traffic-free 30 km (18.6 mi) rural bike loop and a spectator-friendly two-lap 10 km (6.2 mi) run. Promotional rather than an athlete account.
